A question and a thought, since the A50's are not available and if they are, a used one goes for $4000+, can a A40 be used in its place? I know it can be used in a LMM but how about a LML?

Probably your best bet would be to look up a part number for an A40, then go to GMs TIS lookup, enter your vin and see ifvtye A40 p/n is listed when you look up this TCM calibration, but my guess isxwhile they created calibrations for the LMMs and maybe the LBZs and the A50, I kind of doubt they have an A40 calibration for a LML. Could be wrong though.

The A40 is not compatible with the LML. The T14 is the spec replacement for all LML trucks, we have a few new ones left, but as stated, they are not cheap and soon will be extinct at any price. There does not appear to be a horizon timeline or ETA on these. All duramax ecm's and tcm's are affected on some level. The worst case may be this, and the 2016 ECM. As soon as someone comes up with a way to reprogram a used 2016 ECM, we can start supplying them again, otherwise it has to be new, never programmed.
