Is there anyway to tune these engines. I don't know anything about anything really, and I know even less about the pre 98 stuff. This is a 96 5700/350. Are these old school fuel injection? Anyway at all of tuning them? OB1?

96 is still Vortec, unless you got the last TBI engine to ever roll off the assembly line. If it's TBI you can tune it (not with EFI Live) but if it's a 96-97 Vortec you'll need to swap PCM's if you want to use EFILive to tune.

What does TBI stand for, and how hard is an ECM swap. I can swap ecms if it is really that easy. I guess I might as well start searching.

TBI stands for Throttle Body Injection, it was used till 1996 on Full size Vans. It looks like a two barrel with injectors above the throttle blades. If you have this, you have an Eprom "chip" and EFI_Live can only scan this type of system.
If you have the later style Vortec, single blade plastic top intake, that system is a SCPI (Sequential Central Port Injection) system. The 1996-1997 systems cannot be read or tuned with EFI_Live. If you re-pin the harness to accept the 0411 PCM, it can be tuned with EFI_Live and is a much better electronic system to work with.

What year wiring file are you after? PM Lextech for the newest copy of it. I have almost the latest revision if you can't get ahold of him. Jeff is awesome and remember to thank him for his hard work on both the PCM and the wiring file.

I have a 97 2WD running the 12200411 PCM. I swapped it in about 4 hours. I could do another vehicle in less than two, even running the extra wiring to the trans switch.

You'll need some lengths of wire, and 4 GM crimp solder seal connectors. I bought my wire from S10wildside (mike) and he is also awesome. www.eficonnection.com

And one look at the incredibly limited options tuning my '98 has me craving one too.

I tune my 2wd '96 in the sig with EFILive, I'm running the 12200411 PCM from a '02 Camaro that is flashed with the correct calibrations for my setup. you'll want to read up in the link that stealth provided, lots of info, but the swap itself is pretty easy. its basically pulling pins from the blackbox '96 PCM and putting them in the correct place in the 411 PCM. there are a couple splices that need to be made, but nothing major. PM 'Lextech' with your e-mail addres for the current version of the pinout spreadsheet.

BTW, your '96 should be OBDII running a vortec L31 350 (5.7) unless you have a strange setup from mexico or something.

from your name, I take it that you may have tuning experience with the duramax's? if you know your way around EFILive, then the swap becomes much easier, just go to holdencrazy, download the '02 Xvan tune running the L31 vortec with the 411 PCM, turn off VATS, and flash it in...

So the 411's were available in more than just the vans? Didn't know that. . .

oh yeah, TONS of vehicles from 99ish up until 07 ish I believe (I'm sure someone else has the correct years, but its a large span either way). trucks, vans, fbodies, some vettes (i think), it doesn't matter where the 411 PCM comes from, but you will need to flash it with the correct base tune from the Xvan for it to work with the L31 vortec.

They all come with the same OS? Kinda crazy seeing how the F bodies has COP didn't they? Maybe I should read the FAQ. . .

Thanks guys. I have tuned quite a bit of stuff and installed some DSP switches so I have atleast worked with the computer's pins etc.

I just have to get a decent time to do it.

BTW the truck just had a bigger cam put in it that he wanted me to tune. So that is the reason for the tuning "need."

Thanks Again

Many various OS and SERV #'s for the PCM's. 12200411 is just a common one and a great one. 12200411 in a Fbody will be different than 12200411 in a Vette (minor differences in just the tune). Same PCM, different OS.

So a Vortec guy who bought an F-body 411 would need to flash the appropriate OS and tune to start off with then right?

Exactly, the PCM itself is the same but the software and calibration loaded is going to vary widely depending on the application of the original PCM. But just full-flash the OS you want (that fits your application) and then do a cal-only flash to write the cal information that you've changed.

And I use an unlocked program to program 12200411's as many times as a I want instead of spending $100 each PCM for EFI Live unless I need to EFI Live it. ;)

When hunting, is 12200411 the number I want to see somewhere on the case?
