View Full Version : Knock system problems 99 to 02 conversion

I have a 99 vette converted to a 02 Operating System (12212156). Everything is working OK, but I am not comfortable with the Knock System. With the 99 OS, when I heard knock/ping I got KR. When I made changes that I knew would cause knock/ping, I got KR. That correlation is not so evident with the 02 OS Knock settings. In my case, if I use the 99 settings/tables I get KR, lots of it, even where I shouldn’t. Using the 02 OS setting I get no KR, even when I hear it. I have played around with different values in B6210 & B6228 tables with some success, but it would be nice to know what the real hardware/software/setting compatibility should be! A reliable Knock/KR system is better than just relying on ears - since mine aren’t so great. Is anyone else having this issue with a 02 OS conversion? I searched archives and found little on this subject. I found one post entitled “Knock sensor and updating to newer O.S.” originally dated August 30, 2005. Blacky/Paul was involved in this post and said he was going to provide clarification/direction. However, his last reply on this post dated 12/21/05 left the subject without closure. Is there later information or resolution? Anyone? Help will be appreciated!

I would try copying your 1999 knock table values into the 2002 file... actually, all the tables.

Joecar. Thanks for the reply. It isn’t that straight forward. Parameters B6229, B6230 & B6231 are in the 99 OS but not the 02 OS. B6256, B6257, B6258, B6259 & B6255 are in the 02 OS but not the 99 OS. Table B6245 is not the same in 99 OS & 02 OS – both with different x&y axis. These differences, plus the values previously mentioned in B6210 & B6228 tables all add to the discomfort with the 99 to 02 OS knock system conversion. With KR as important to our tuning as it is, trying to second-guess the credibility of a hybrid knock system makes it difficult. All of the above was the basis for the previously mentioned post “Knock sensor and updating to newer O.S.” originally dated August 30, 2005 that Blacky/Paul was involved in, and ended with no resolution. That is why I asked if there was later information or resolution? Help will be appreciated!

Which knock sensor does your motor have?

nevinsb...they are relatively new stock sensors for a 99 vette.

Can you post the link to that thread, and I'll take another look. I probably won't be able to add much. I recall doing some research into the problem but I could not find out much about the knock subsystem.

Thanks
Paul

Paul…thanks for responding. When I transferred my 99 settings, as best as possible, into the 02 operating system I had big time KR - including places I should have had none. When I used the stock settings in the 02 operating system I got no KR - anywhere, even when I could hear it. It was dead. Tables B6228 & B6210 are big questions. The second filters are questions. Sorry, for not replying yet, I'm away from the office and won't be back until next week. I will look at it then.

I spent some time yesterday going over the knock system, at least the parts that I can see. As I said in an earlier post the knock system relies on external hardware that I can't access. That makes it difficult, (almost impossible) for me to figure out why there are differences between the 99 and 01 model year calibrations and what effect those differences might have.

If you have access to an 01 model year PCM then try that PCM with the 01 operating systems instead of the 99 PCM with th 01 operating system. That will help narrow down the problem.
