Has anyone had this problem where all DVD discs can't be seen anymore...?

PC or movies?
My answer is no either way.

Happens on either data or video DVD discs...

Sometimes the DVD drive doesn't show up... when it does show up, it reads only CDs and doesn't see any DVD I've inserted...

Microsoft's answer is to delete the "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" keys from the dvd drive node somewhere deep in the HKLM branch in the registry, and then to reload the driver... but it doesn't work... I can't seem to solve it.

Have before , but it was a hardware thing , the Plextor drive gave it up after using some cheap disc in it .
Have you tried flashing the drive , just like BIOS you can flash a new set of features (disc compatibility).
Region coeds can be wrong .

I havent had this happen, I was thinking a reflash of the firmware (maybe use a region free one hehe) might help out. Then reinstall the drivers.

Another thing to watch in Winders is if someone has a write to CD/DVD qued (built in Roxio burning software) it will cause a error sometimes , check to make sure no one has a CD or DVD information waiting to be written to disc .
FYI , some drives have a manual self check mode , check and see if the drive you are working on has that function .
