Hoping this is not inappropriate, but I'm posting this knowing how difficult it is to get a local GM service shop to recalibrate an ECM/TCM apart from the vehicle. Had I not already gone through the inconvenience and difficulties of convincing the local GM service department to do a few Tech2 ECM recalibrations using a provided benchtop programming harness...

With the recent release of the EFI Connection 58x system for early SBC and late 7.4L BBC engines, we had to get set up for GM TIS-SPS programming to initialize new Gen IV ECMs/TCMs and be able to reprogram used Gen IV ECMs/TCMs with new base GM tunes.

In other words, turn an Impala E38 into a Corvette E38...where the issue is that a full flash aside from a GM TIS-SPS reprogram will not overwrite all calibration segments.

If you are in need of this service, please contact mike@eficonnection.com or visit http://www.eficonnection.com and click on "GM Calibration Services" under "ECU Programming" in the left side navigation.

Hm.. that I didn't know. So you can turn a 2008 E38 into a 2010 E38?

If he wants some doorstops shaped like an E38 then yes.

Like suggested above, it's something to be careful of.

The Ram Jet 454 we have running on the test stand with 58x equipment is using an E38 pulled from a 2008 Impala. It was reflashed with a 2008 Corvette calibration using the GM TIS-SPS service. After the GM calibration we were good to go with EFILive tuning.

TIS - Technical Information System
SPS - Service Programming System

There is also a 2007 Impala E38 in the shop that has been reprogrammed with a 2007 Corvette calibration.

The salvage yards are still proud of these ECUs (prices are high), so I won't be the one who tries a 2008 calibration in a 2010 ECM (and so on).

Others have and it will end in tears.
There is 4 different E38 part numbers now, two that seem to cover all 2006-2008, then one for 2009 and finally the 2010 ECM.

12597121,12612384 = 2006 - 2008
12625455 = 2009
12633238 = 2010

There is a few threads on here that have discussed this in depth.

Cheers,
Ross

Ross,

Are the 2006 to 2008 PCM's interchangeable??

Yes and no Howard.
The 2006/2007 should be fine, worst that will happen with a 2008 is the VIN will get corrupted and the Crank Relearn will need to be done.
Thinking about it, 12597121 probably covers 2006-2007, 12612384 is for 2008.

I've never been able to flash an 08 calibration into a 121 ECM. Haven't tried working it backwards.

Tried flashing a '10 truck cal into a junk 455 ECM (broken retaining tab) and it took the calibration fine, EFILive couldn't retrieve the calibration though.

If you put a real '10 OS into a 5455 E38 then you probably have a brick now.

12633238 is the '10 as Ross listed above. GM parts info lists it as "no start" if cal is not right. :bad:

It was a useless E38 to me as it was and had to test a theory. GM listed both the 5455 and the 3238 for that truck for some reason, depending on software version.

(broken retaining tab)

I HATE when that happens! Got one of them here.

That's the problem, it will take the calibration fine, it's what happens on the next power cycle that is bad.

Theory? :)
