Hey guys i have had my v2 for some time but have yet to be able to black box flash with it. Yesterday i installed the july,20 beta release and now i cant black box read either. I think ive read every post in the forum in the last couple days trying to figure it out haha. Ive tried unistalling and doing a clean reinstall, formatting my flash memory, sd card and config sys but still get the error messazge regardless. i can retrieve dtcs but cant bbr. Also when i format my flash memory the progress bar doesnt move across the screen like when i format the sd card. Im using the most current software, firmware and bootblock available. Tried reading a 99+ ls1, e38, lbz and no luck. if anyone knows what im doing wrong please let me know

Hi jc, welcome to the forum.

I notified Tech Support.

There is a hidden mode that will test the internal flash memory. I don't have access to a FlashScan V2 right now but when I get back to the office (in about an hour) I will post the steps required for you to do the test. If that test fails then the flash memory chip in FlashScan is faulty and will need to be replaced.

Paul

Also if i do have a problem with the internal flash memory would i still be able to pass thru read and write?

Select: F4 Options -> F4: Self Tests -> F4. The last F4 menu option is not displayed, just press F4 it anyway.
You will see a screen stating that for the ALD, VPW and CAN tests a 2nd FlashScan must be connected, press Ok.
Then you will see a screen full of test options.

Press 2 to "quick" test the flash EEPROM.
Press Ctrl+2 to fully test the flash EEPROM.

(Note: the 2 is the number 2 key, i.e. the Ok key, not the F2 key)

It will take about 10 minutes to completely test it. If it fails then you'll need to return your FlashScan for repair.

Yes

That tells us that the flash chip is working correctly. But it still leaves a question as to why you can't format the flash memory.
I recommend returning it for repair because I can;'t think of any reason why the flash memory format would hang.

Just to confirm, you've got boot block 2.03.06 and firmware 2.06.35 in your FlashScan?

That should not make any difference. It should work in both those versions.

Just a couple of points to consider.
1. There are 2 internal file systems that need to be formatted. You need to perform a format on the Data file system using the menu option on FlashScan. You also need to format the config file system using the [Format Config] button on the Config tab page of EFILive_Explorer (or on the drop-down program button in the Black Box settings option of EFILive_ScanAndTune).
2. When formatting the data file system the progress bar will jump immediately to about 4/5ths complete, then the format is done. The progress bar does not have time to "move" because the internal data file system is so small (compared to formatting an SD Card).

Ya ive formatted both the data and config exactly as i have read on numerous other threads. so it sounds like when im formatting my flash memory its working properly they way u describe it. i wasnt sure if that was normal or not. ive tried a couple different sd cards as well but no luck

Ok so I'm the idiot here, sorry. I should have looked up what $050B meant, instead I just assumed it meant "could not format memory".
$050B means the script file you using is not compatible with the firmware in FlashScan.

When you install/update the firmware in FlashScan you should re-program the [Config] file system using the [Program -> All required Data] option.
That will force all the *.obj files to get updated on FlashScan and ensure that the *obj files are compatible with the latest firmware.

Paul

I have actually tried that as well a couple times now after a clean install of all the software and formatting my internal memory and my sd card. i noticed ee wont let me format my data remotely so i just do it manually on the flashscan but from what ive read this is normal as well. could it be the beta firmware? any way i could possibly revert back to 2.06.35?

No worries, we want to get you going...

Run the S&T program, go into Device Settings, program to FlashScan;

then go into Black Box settings, goto Tune Settings tab, select 1 engine controller that you have (say LS1B); do not select a trans controller yet; program into FlashScan;

exit S&T, try doing BBR on your LS1B vehicle, and report back.

Hey joecar i will give that a try

jennett_c
July 28th, 2010, 01:21 PM
still no luck. it seems that the erro message pops up almost too quick haha. removed all items from the scan list and the tune list in black box settings. then picked e38 only. saved and formatted config.sys. programmed all required data (slower) tried on truck and script not supported by current firmware error

i just force reinstalled my boot block and firmware in e explorer. the boot block seems to program instantly but remains in dead poll mode till i program the firmware like it should. the firmware programs alot slower. is this just the differences in file sizes?

jennett_c

also while in explorer under the firmware pane it shows my flashscan serial number is the same as my flashscan license number. is this right?

Yes that is correct, for your first EFILive device. All subsequent devices you purchase from EFILive will (should) have a unique serial number but the same license number as your first unit

Hey guys great news i think its fixed. i went back into the hidden menu as per blackys instructions but instead of checking my flash memory i pressed f4 once again and i erased everything. i then reinstalled all the efi live software. formatted the config.sys and data sys(internal and sd) went into scan and tune and programmed e38. went to truck and was able to black box read!!! Finally. Im so pumped now. just gotta try and flash now. will keep u guys posted. and thanks for all the help this far

I don't know - yet.
What is the modified date/time of the *.obj files in the folder:
(for Vista/Win7) C:\ProgramData\EFILive\V8\Config
(for Win2K/XP) S:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\EFILive\V8\Config
Can you delete everything in that folder, then re-install the V8 software That will ensure new *.obj files are installed, just in case the installer decides the files already exist and does not overwrite them during the install.
Then using V8 EFILiveS can And Tune->Black Box Settings, drop down the list under the [Program] button and select the "Format Config file system" option.
Then configure the target controller you want to BBR/BBF on the [F4 Tune Settings] tab page.
The drop down the list under the [Program] button and select "Program All Required Data (slower)" option.

Meanwhile, can you tell me what the target controller is you're trying to read/flash and I'll check the install files here to make sure they are correct. There's a chance I may have included the wrong version *.obj script files in the release you're using.

Paul
