I was wondering if any one had any pictures of the 4x reluctor used in an express van 2001 - 2002 and the 1x cam setup (distributor pickup)

any info would be great

Hello doubledip,

I don’t have a photo of a 4x reluctor handy. The 24x and 58x reluctors are pressed on to the rear of Gen III / IV crankshafts. The Vortec V6 (3x reluctor) and Vortec V8 (4x reluctor) are located on the front of the crankshaft, under the timing chain cover. These are not pressed on, but are referenced by a keyway in the crankshaft snout - just like the camshaft sprocket. The timing cover on these engines are plastic, and the CKP sensor is located on the lower edge, toward the passenger side (if memory serves !).

Hope this helps …

Taz

is the 4x reluctor just 4 segments in a cross pattern?

also the 1x cam is it like a ls1 (as in 180 on and 180 off)?

The 4x reluctor looks like a small hub (or a saucer under a tea cup). The 1x CMP sensor is in the distributer. If the distributer has been moved / removed - it can be a royal pain to get set correctly again. It is NOT referenced like older Gen I engines - at minimum, a cheap Haynes or Chilton manual is a must (if you don’t already have the Helm factory manual) to set the distributer / CMP sensor relationship. Once set, it is non-adjustable.

I was taught there is no such thing as a silly question, just silly not to ask a question !

A “global” website makes for challenges in communication, and points of reference. You may already know some of the following, so please forgive any redundancies.

L31 5.7 L Vortec engines:

Gen I based architecture
used an ignition system that featured a distributor, cap, rotor, and single external coil
used a “spider” style poppet valve fuel injection system (one injector per cylinder)
installed in many OEM production vehicles from 1996 - 2000
carried over in Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana van applications from 2001 - 2002
used a 4x CKP sensor and a 1x CMP sensor

PCM

1996 - 2000 applications used the black box Vortec style PCM
2001 - 2002 van applications used the LS1-B style PCM
the LS1-B style PCM may be used to control any 1996 - 2002 L31 5.7 L engine - ”0411” swap

There are two 2002 Express van tunes on the Holdencrazy site - one for an L31 5.7 L engine with 4L60E transmission, and the other for an L31 5.7 L engine with 4L80E transmission.

Hope this helped ….
