I'm not an Aussie and I have Newton-Meters of torque and kPas of pressure. What in the hell possessed you to start this thread??

I like original Nabisco Fig Newtons. I hate the strawberry flavored ones........taste like Pepto-Bismol. YUCK!

Do you want a before or after picture?
By consulting my Strine to foreign language dictionary I have found that a fig newton is a laxative of the American variety. We don't need them here... we have a selection of potitical leaders to choose from to achieve the same result:hihi:

Let me set them strait. In the land down under they are refered to as biscuits, not cookies. I think that's where the confusion lies. :beer:

And I also found out the hard way, in the US that:

when I asked for chips I got crisps, when I wanted fries.
when I asked for a serviette the waitress was sent over, when I actually wanted a napkin.
when I said I left my thongs in my hotel room, I did not mean a collection of g-strings, I meant jandals (or flip-flops)

:cheers: I'm learning...

Always remember that in the USA you cant ask for a spanner you must ask for a wrench and the letter Z is pronounced Zee and not Zed.

Ohh Also remember that "I let one rip" means "I cut one" to a yank.

Just to chime in:

Correct!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton
are not the same as:
http://www.nabiscoworld.com/Brands/brandlist.aspx?SiteId=1&CatalogType=1&BrandKey=newtons&BrandLink=/newtons/&BrandId=75&PageNo=1/

But, the question of the day is:
How many Newtons can a Fig Newton take until a Fig Newton is not a Newton anymore? :)

Now twinkies have me confused. When I was a kid I used to read loads of super hero comics (didn't we all?). In the front cover was usually an add for twinkies. NEVER ONCE did the adds actually say what twinkies were. I still don't know. As close as I can figure they are some sort of cake? (I guess I should just google it)

EDIT: Well I googled it but I still don't know what a twinkie is made of.

Anyone?

What Makes a Twinkie?

The list of ingredients of a Twinkie is a veritable Who's Who of the food chemical world and the following is a list of ingredients as provided on a ten-pack of Twinkies. Take a deep breath:

* Enriched Wheat Flour - enriched with ferrous sulphate (iron), B vitamins (niacin, thiamine mononitrate [B1], ribofavin [B12] and folic acid).
* Sugar
* Corn syrup
* Water
* High fructose corn syrup
* Vegetable and/or animal shortening - containing one or more of partially hydrogenated soybean, cottonseed or canola oil, and beef fat.
* Dextrose
* Whole eggs

How's your stomach? Really? Oh dear... Well hold tight because Twinkies also contain 2% or less of:

* Modified corn starch
* Cellulose gum
* Whey
* Leavenings (sodium acid pyrophosphate, baking soda, monocalcium phosphate)
* Salt
* Cornstarch
* Corn flour
* Corn syrup solids
* Mono and diglycerides
* Soy lecithin
* Polysorbate 60
* Dextrin
* Calcium caseinate
* Sodium stearol lactylate
* Wheat gluten
* Calcium sulphate
* Natural and artificial flavours
* Caramel colour
* Sorbic acid (to retain freshness)
* Colour added (yellow 5, red 40)

Got it - thanks. I'm going to try one next time I'm in the US. Is it possible to eat just one?

I got a suprise at a convention in San Jose on one of my first trips to the US. The program said "breakfast supplied" so I declined the hotel's room service breaksfast expecting a hearty breakfast at the convention. I got there and breakfast consisted of coffee, jolt cola and donuts. Now I like cola and donuts as much as the next guy but for breakfast? Call me old fashioned but where's my cornflakes and vegemite toast? Ha! who would eat vegemite as an adult if you had not eaten it by the spoonful, as a kid? It looks awful, it smells awful, is the waste sludge from manufacturing beer, but tastes great. (I'm off to have some now).

Do you know the difference between an optimist, pessimist, and an engineer?

The optimist will say the glass is half full

The pessimist will say the glass is half empty

The engineer will say the glass is twice as big as it needs to be

He he he, that's funny...

And the engineer will be able to tell you the mechanical, electrical and thermal properties of the glass [and the water], will run some partial differential equations to find the optimum size of the glass, and will proceed to cut the glass and to heat treat it for strength. :banana::banana::cucumber::banana: Hmmm... the green banana has a misfire...

As Australian as the Sydney Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, or kangaroos! Loved by Aussies since the early 1920s, Vegemite is a thick dark spread used on toast or bread, or as a flavoring in soups and casseroles. It is said that a Vegemite sandwich to an Australian kid is the equivalent of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to an American kid.

Hungry for a Vegemite sandwich? Take two slices of bread and slab on some butter and a small dollop of Vegemite. Start small if you're a first timer. The Vegemite will mix right in with the butter and spread easily. Enjoy. 4 ounces (113 grams)

Yeast based:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegemite
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Promite
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marmite
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cenovis

Beef based (but now altered to yeast based):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bovril

So it seems there must be quite a few earthlings that eat the stuff, otherwise the food companies would be wasting their time on this. :notacrook:

That lyric has always stumped me...until now.

Vegemite sandwich...
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/1/10/Vegemiteontoast_large.jpg/250px-Vegemiteontoast_large.jpg

I would put the Vegemite on thicker than that (about 1 mm evenly spread on each slice).

Hmmm after reading joecar's reference material I now know why kiwi marmite tastes so much better than that pommy shite!!!

Blended to perfection, not to mention seeing it is a beer by-product, that means it is made from the far superior NZ beer to start with!!! :rockon: :beer:

Getting back to the Twinkies and Fig Newtons...thanks Bink, the box arrived yesterday.

I didn't realise you bought up the entire local supply of twinkies and Fig Newtons - we'll be eating them till next Christmas.

They get the big thumbs up from our two daughters (4 and 7 years old). One prefers Twinkies the other prefers the Fig Newtons. They really did not know what to make of a Twinkie when I first showed it to them. They backed away like I was holding a brussel sprout or something equally hideous to children.

Now I am fighting them off to get to the next box first...
