View Full Version : USB connection problem, no solder on pins?

I had been having intermittent connection problems between my EFILive V2 and my computer since I have had it. As long as I didn't move the EFILive it was fine so I never thought to much about it till the other day. I was in the middle of a complete ECM reflash and I bumped the thing and lost the connection, fortunately I was able to reflash and the ECM was OK but I didn't want to take any more chances.

I got a different USB cable to try that, no change. Thought I'd take the case apart on the EFILive and see and this is what I found.

Now I am no electronics guru but if I had to guess I am assuming those 4 studs off of the USB plug should be soldered to the board, right? Anyway I thought I'd post it up and see if anyone else had had similar problem and if there was a known recall that I happened to miss. I have no big deal with trying to solder the pins and seeing if that fixes my problem but will wait to see what others have to say...

Interesting. It is not a common problem or related to a particular manufacturing batch, it will very much be a one off (or rare occurrence).

If you are in the USA you could send it across to Fish Tuning if you wanted to have it resolved professionally. Or if the unit is outside it's 12 month warrant period you could have a go yourself. Technically opening the case alone voids warranty, but given the finding I think this could be an exception.

If you want to send to Fish Tuning let me know and I'll email you the details.

I am almost certainly out of the 12 month warranty. I am fairly sure I purchased the unit in the summer of 2008, but I would have to dig up the receipt to be sure. So unless you going to give a 1 year extension to the warranty I will be having a go at it myself. Shouldn't be to difficult. Just wanted to bring it up in case anyone else was having connection issues to the computer. Thank you for the concern though.

We would certainly solder the joints at no cost, it's a manufacturing fault after all. You would just need to cover the shipping cost. But, equally it should be pretty simple so you're obviously welcome to have a go as well :)

I think mine is having the same issue!!!

I'm guessing your unit is well out of warranty now? Has it just started happening, in which case it could be something else? If you want to cover the shipping to and from either Fish Tuning in the USA or EFILive in New Zealand and it's the same fault we'll repair it. Or, you are welcome to take a look at it yourself?

So yours ended up being the same issue. That is pretty crappy. Not a "one off" issue I guess. Glad mine is not giving me grief.

Mine had solder points.. but i beat the shit out of this unit

this unit has fallen more than 50 times... EASYz

i have stepped on it

i even compressed when it was stuck under a seat... i have done so many flashes. This is a WORKHORSE OF A UNIT

look at the issues and when it finally died... i let the warranty expired even when paul told me to ship it back many times...

MY UNIT IS AN ENGINEERING UNIT because I was so desperate to try it out...

Paul has always taken care of me.... As a matter of fact paul has done more than he should. This has been my mistake/missuse....

this was his reply RIGHT NOW.

We can ship one out today if you can send a license backup file (*.lbu) of your existing FlashScan.
Regards
Paul

absolutely agreed. The service from the EFILive team is exceptional, I've always been looked after commercially and technically.

Just a thought here, those look like plated through holes. Any chance it's soldered on the other side of the board?

EDIT: Just checked some old pics from here...

http://forum.efilive.com/showthread.php?17993-SD-Card-Socket-Replacement

No, it's not soldered on the other side.

If you can remove the USB socket maybe trying getting a new one from an electronics shop, I've done this on a few V2's out here that had intermittent USB issues. Usually they come in with a USB cable bent at right angles covered in duct tape

I tried resoldering mine... and I even tested out the connections with the pins.. they all seemed right...

Anyways... You guys can take a look of my unit when it gets there.
