I pulled off the crankshaft balancer on a 2000 5.3 liter vortec in a suburban because it was damaged at the junkyard and I am wondering why there if no keyway in it. no slot whatsoever. Does anyone know if the balancer is just pressed and held on only by the new stretch bolt? It is becoming hard to find a balancer installer for this engine. the threads are resest in so far. where is the best place to find a tool to press it on. napa and others try selling me tools that will not work. I basically just need a long metric bolt but I am so far unable to find one. any help would be very kind. I will get it eventually on my own but I don't understand why it is so strange compared to older vehicles with woodruff keyways that could be put on with the old bolt.

Nope no key way , some say if you heat the pulley shaft not the crank it will slip on easier , don't heat it to (remember engine gets about 200 to 220*) much and grease the seal lip before trying this .
A impact works best the hammering of the impact keeps the bolt from pulling the threads .
GM sells a over length bolt for like $20 .
My $.02

thanks. I will head to a chevy dealer on monday. only other option I came up with was to cut off the old bolt and weld some ready rod onto it to lengthen it then push in on that way with a nut and washer. but if it is going to go on real hard, that is probably a bad idea.
