View Full Version : Is 45* too high for low load low rpm cruising?

I have 44* right now. Just want to make sure it's not too much. Don't hear any misses but I don't have knock sensors either.

It's only 3-4* over stock so . . . What do you guys think?

I use up to 44 degrees of spark advance at .20 g/cyl and less. That pretty much equates to a downhill-level pavement cruise. I usually hit those values in 6th gear..seems to like it and I never get KR/pinging in that zone.:)..

Thanks for the info! :)

Shawn could you post your High Octane table plz

I run about 4-5 different set-ups depending on fuel type, weather etc.

This one works good for me...within ~15 HP of max..No KR. I would not necessarily recommend it to everyone, but here it is..

Thanks a lot Shawn
How much spark you are using at idle ?

Currently running 26 degrees of Spark at Idle (BSIG).

Hi Shawn, I see that you are commanding 22* WOT ... did you see no significant gains with higher timing?

I know everybody's set-up is different and ours are not the exception but I just want to see if I might be a tad high with my 29*.

Thanks for all the help!

My Heads don't like more than 25 degrees of WOT. The Intake Runners on the Terminator Heads are only 200cc..its a 62cc Head. I think using a 110+2 Cam builds up the cylinder pressure to such a degree that you don't need the additional spark advance to get your power.

So, its within 10-15 HP of Max with 22 degrees. In winter, or on the track I may use 25 degrees, but on my street tune I go conservative with no KR.

I am surprised you can get away with 29 degrees of spark. Do you ping or get any KR, or just have access to good gas?

I run OTC 93 octane.

I don't actually "see" a problem BUT I don't have knock sensors either :(

The shop that installed my 402 and swapped my Ls6 heads/FAST90/Vindicator for my LS3 top-end didn't re-install my knock sensors. The previous set-up could handle 29* all day and I just thought to keep it with the new heads/cam/intake.

I'm going to back off some high-end timing and see if I notice any power loss. It was one thing I was most unsure about; whether or not the LS3's could take timing.

I'd like to do more research and get more input from others with 402/LS3 top ends and see what their max hp/timing is. Have you run across others with similar set-ups that see better results with low 20's?

I am not as sure about timing with your set-up.

I did mine on the dyno. There was a myriad of threads on LS1Tech.com recently that addressed timing on LS6 Heads and especially the LS6 Intake. There were quite of number of Tuners that actually got more HP/TQ with 22 degrees of timing vs 25-27.

Theory being if your Heads & Compression Ratio already have amply cylinder pressure, then you don't need spark to make it.

Luckily my car has the better KR sensors..plus I can hear pinging very easy in it. Ultimately the dyno will tell you the most..:).

Very true. My damn set-up is so loud now at WOT it is difficult to hear anything else lol!

I'm gonna back it down to 22* until I get back to the dyno.

Thanks for your assistance Shawn :)

I bet the new ideas came from the LS3 Vette tune and the C6ZO6 tune. They run low timing as well. Guess the compression explains it :)
