I have a 2011 Silverado HD2500 crew cab pickup that is brand new with a little over 500 miles on it. Today I went to read the controller and received the following error message.

Error $0537 Controller Is Locked With a custom key.

Now I know that this truck has not been programed or messed with.

Does anyone know why this would come up, and is there a work around for it.

Thank you for your help in advance.

In version 8 pass-thru, have you tried checking the "Alt Keys" check box prior to reading?

If that still does not work, then after attempting the read in pass-thru mode can you please locate the *.htx file in the folder:
\My Documents\EFILive\V8\Trace\XXX_R_YYYYMMDD_HHMMSS.h tx

Where XXX is the controller type
YYYYMMDD is the year, month and day, and
HHMMSS is the hour, minute and second that you attempted the read.

Please send that file to me at paul@efilive.com

Paul

Also are you running the latest software/firmware from the main EFILive.com downloads section?

And is this an LML engine, or LMM? If its LML you cant read it.

I have received that error / locked message before when the incorrect ECM type was selected. Double check that you have selected the E78 (if it's a gasoline engine) as the target ECM to connect with.

The truck has a 6.0L gas engine.

I was using BBL to read the tune. Do I have to use pass-thru

I am running the latest software and firmware

Had E38 selected as that is what the supported vehicle list says.

Will try the E78 in the morning.

You can BBR or pass-thru read it with V8. Select E78 as the ECM controller, the 2011 2500HD 6.0L V8s moved from the E38 -> E78 so thats probably why you cant read it out.

The 2011 trucks appear to use both E38 and E78 ECMs. Haven't seen enough of them yet to have a definitive list. The 1500 4.8 L seem to use E38 ECMs. The 2500 6.0 L seem to use E78 ECMs.

The 2011 2500 with the L96 (6.0L) is the only truck using the E78, I guess at some point soon all the V8's will swap to the E78.
When you run EFILive V8 just press the Auto Detect button in the read window, it will detect if it's an E38 or E78 for you. The V7 software cannot be used to read or write to the E78, you must use Version 8 for that.

Interesting, ok well I updated my earlier post so it doesnt confuse anyone.

Auto Detect is nifty, dont have to hassle picking the correct controller. Any plans to make that an option on the V2? I know it could only work if you copied the appropriate BBX files, but maybe an option to have the V2 report what controller the ECM/TCM is using?

Thank you for all your help. Solution listed below.

I tried the E78 and still had the same error.

I was running the latest boot block and firmware, , but it seemed funny that no one else was having the problem. So I took and reprogrammed the Boot Block, and the loaded the firmware and now I can read the E78 computer.

I must have had a corrupted boot block or firmware file on the V2.

Are you sure it was the latest firmware/bootblock? Everything Ive seen on the V2/AutoCal is if the firmware is corrupt it simply wont reboot and will stay in dead-poll until a valid firmware file is loaded.

Did you recopy the BBX files after updating the firmware? That has done it for me a few times.

I had the latest firmware/bootblock.

Yes I did copy the config file over again. But I did not change any settings.
