Hi.

I am looking to modify my '96 GMC Safari and have been told that before I look to get the current PCM re-flashed I should fit a PCM from a 2001-2002 Astro/Safari.

I was wondering what peoples thoughts were on this and would love to hear from people who have done this previously.

Is it difficult and are there any other parts needed to complete the job?

Thanks in advance,

Ben :)

Hello Ben,

Replacing a "Black Box" Vortec PCM with an LS1-B style PCM is a well documented swap - generally referred to as an "0411" swap (for PCM service number 12200411). This swap greatly increases your tuning options.

A word of caution ... 1996 was an odd year for GM. The S10 trucks in 1996 had the ABS control incorporated into the PCM (one year only feature) ... not sure if this is also true of the Astro / Safari van platform. If so, you would also need to install an ABS control module from a newer model Astro to complete the swap and retain all previous functionality.

I have never worked with the Astro / Safari platform ... so I'm not certain about the ABS controller setup.

Taz
