I bought a 1998 Grand Prix GTP to get me by and I got it cheap (relatively) with a miss under load. Going to do plugs today, but totally not holding my breath. I had the ignition module tested, and it tested good. Don't have a scope to test the coils, so I'm stuck there, but it does miss cold so I'm leaning away from it being a coil. Wires look pretty new too. I was watching a video on youtube where this mechanic had a legitimate scanner and though the vehicle wouldn't throw a code, he could go in and view the misfire counts on each cylinder. Apparently, the CEL wouldn't be set until X amount of misfires. I'm wondering if I can do that with EFI Live and if EFI Live supports whatever PCM is in my car?

easyiest way is to plug in and validate pids
then look under spark for missfires,and miss fire counts
there there for the vortec and ls pcms

Old news, but it was the plugs. Currently trying to locate the post that outlines how to finish updating my software so I can do stuff with the laptop again, the handheld dealy isn't upgraded yet and thus won't talk to my V8 laptop.

Download and install both V7 build 211 and V8 build 203 from the downloads page at www.efilive.com (http://www.efilive.com)

if your V2 firmware is earlier than 2.07.xx, then please read attached doc carefully before proceeding;

if your V2 firmware is at version 2.07.xx, then do this:
- flash in the new bootblock;
- flash in the new firmware (your new firmware will be 2.07.35);

then, start the V8 Scan & Tune (S&T) software, and do this:
- goto F5: BBx;
- goto Scan;
- edit the pidlist (remove any for controllers other than your PCM, create new ones for your PCM);
- goto Tune;
- edit the controller list (remove the ones that are not your PCM, create one for your PCM if not already present);
- goto DTC;
- checkmark the GM DTC's;
- click Save and save to file Options.txt;
- click the downarrow next to the Program buttton and click Format Config Space, and let it finish;
- click the downarrow next to the Program button and click Program All, and let it finish;
- click Close (to exit form BBx);
- exit from V8 S&T;

you now are in a position to do:
- V7 passthru logging/flashing,
- V2 BBx standalone logging/flashing.

So last night I installed V7.5 and V8, the newest versions thereof, and proceeded to attempt to flash in the new bootlock and that's where it all went wrong. I entered the correct mode and got my flashing ambers, selected the file referenced in the tutorial, hit program and it wouldn't communicate. Naturally, I got pissed as following the instructions to the letter got me nowhere, so I retrograded to my old assed software and got it all playing nice. I then saw the PIDs for misfire counts and the like, but I still need to do the software upgrade so I can tune vehicles made after I purchased my Flashscan. I'm a little gunshy for round 3 as at the conclusion of round 2 I'm able to datalog/tune my Vette. Unless I wasn't supposed to manually enter dead poll mode prior to hitting program as the instructions state that it will enter dead poll mode automatically? Perhaps being in dead poll mode from the get go was the cause of the communication error?

If it doesn't enter dead poll automatically then enter it manually...

then when it's in dead poll (alternate flashing amber leds), it means it's waiting for you to flash in the firmware (using V8 EFILive Explorer).

Also make sure you have the old USB driver installed...

Start->All Programs->EFILive->Tools->USB Utility

from the utility uninstall the new driver and install the old driver (you can see which is which by the version numbers).

I wonder if the driver was the problem. . . I'll re-engage that tomorrow.
