Install the latest V7 and V8 (both) software builds from here: Software-Updates-and-Installation-Help (http://forum.efilive.com/forumdisplay.php?71-Software-Updates-and-Installation-Help)
Flash the latest bootblock/firmware into your V2:
- start V8 Scan & Tune (S&T),
- click Check Firmware,
- if the firmware needs updating you will see a button Update Firmware, click it,
- if the V2 BBx configuration needs updating you will see a button to Refresh it, click it (see Note below),
- click Ok to exit the firmware update dialog box.
Note: If you had already configured V2 BBx as shown below, then click the button you see to Refresh the V2 BBx config (see pic below), wait until the refresh is finished, and now you're done.
Note: if you have not yet configured V2 BBx config then continue here:
Insert an SD card into your FSV2 (and leave it in your FSV2 from now on).
Configure BBx for your PCM or ECM/TCM:
- start V8 Scan & Tune (S&T),
- goto F6: Devices,
- set File System to SD Card,
- save to file Settings.dat,
- click Program,
- click Close,
- goto F5: BBX,
- click Format Config File System (accessed via downarrow next to Program button),
- goto Scan page (see Note below),
- in the blue pane delete pidlists for ECM's other than yours,
- in the blue pane you can add new pidlists for your ECM,
- each pidlist in the blue pane can have a number of pids as shown in the green pane (to which you can add pids from the yellow pane),
- at the bottom of the green pane is a bargraph showing pid usage, do not let this turn red (too many pids selected),
- goto Tune page,
- delete any ECM's other than yours,
- if not already present, add entries for your ECM type(s),
- goto DTC page,
- checkmark the DTC descriptions you want to see,
- save to file Options.txt,
- click Program All (accessed via downarrow next to Program button), wait for it to finish,
- click Close,
- goto F8:Tools (if you have any .tun files to conver to .ctz),
- in the upper box, browse to your .tun files, and click Convert Now,
- click Close,
- exit V8 S&T.
More Info: kb_article.php?ref=6659-YAHB-3781 (https://support.efilive.com/kb_article.php?ref=6659-YAHB-3781)
Note: on the Scan page, the right-hand pane is yellow, the upper-left pane is blue, and the lower-left pane is green.
This pic shows the Update Firmware window with the BBX Configuration Refresh button:

First, from the V7 tunetool, save your .tun files as .ctz (this is now the tune file extension type).
Then copy those .ctz files to your V2:
- start V8 EFILive Explorer (EE),
- goto Data Files tab,
- click Home,
- upper pane (PC): locate the .ctz files,
- lower pane (V2): go into the Tune folder,
- copy/paste/drag the .ctz files from the upper pane (PC) to the lower pane (V2),
- exit EE.

September 30th, 2012, 09:09 AM
- start V8 Scan & Tune (S&T),
- goto F6: Devices,
- goto Logging page,
- checkmark Automatically select ALL digital (serial) PIDs <-- do this for serial wideband
- checkmark Automatically select ALL analog PIDs <-- do this for analog wideband
- set Logging Speed to Fast (10-40 frames/second),
- goto Serial I/O,
- set Com Port to Wideband,
- set Wideband Type to your wideband,
- save to file Settings.dat,
- click Program,
- click Close,
- exit V8 S&T.

When you BBL log, these serial wideband pids will be included (they occupy zero pid channels):
- EXT.WO2AFR1 and 2,
- EXT.WO2LAM1 and 2,
- EXT.WO2EQR1 and 2,
- EXT.WO2ST1 and 2.
( these are the wideband pids, so do not log the analog wideband AFR/BEN pids )

After you have setup your V2 as shown in post #1 above, you are now ready to do BBL logging...
1. Using FlashScan's keypad do F1 Select PIDs, then select the pidlist you want to log, and press Ok.
2. Press 0/Power to start logging.
3. Press Ok to toggle pause on/off.
4. Use up/down arrow key s to scroll; use left/right arrow keys to page.
5. Press F1..F4 or Ctrl-F1..Ctrl-F4 to insert notes 1 thru 8 (respectively) on the fly into log.
6. Press Enter to toggle units Metric/Custom.
7. Press Ctrl-Enter to toggle font small/large.
8. Press Ctrl-DownArrow to toggle LCD background/foreground (may help visibility in direct sunlight).
9. Press Cancel terminate and save it as a file.
Notes:
i. the blue LED illuminates whenever FlashScan writes data (to internal memory or to SD card);
ii. the LED Mode must be set to “S” (Status) to allow the blue LED to illuminate (as in Note i above).

I'm probably jumping the gun a bit in my learning curve, but the question is in my mind now, so.....
I have a couple of SanDisk Ultra SD HC 4Gb cards sitting right here on my desk. Are they compatible with the FlashScan V2?
If not, which brands/sizes are compatible?

SD card should stay in always (it has way more space for logs/tunes than internal memory).

A quick tip on internal memory vs the SD card.
Internal memory is about 2MB, which will give around 30 min worth of logging on an E38, less if logging a TCM as well.
Approximate tune file sizes (ctz) are as follows...
LS1B - 0.44 MB
E40 - 0.91 MB
E38 - 1.7 MB
E39 - 2.7 MB
T42 - 0.44 MB
T43 - 1.56 MB

Thanks for the reply, thats what I am doing. I dont have the files saved in the V7.5 or V8 folders because when I go to save them they dont display available in the save as folder, I have them saved to a desktop folder. Could this be my problem? The files are saving as a .tun file and not a .ctd file. What is the difference between the .ctd, .ctz, and the .tun files?
joecar
March 27th, 2013, 07:44 AM
.tun = V7 tunetool old format
.ctd = V8/V2 format, not used any more
.ctz = V8/V2 format
Move your .tun files from the desktop to My Documents\EFILive\V7.5\Bins (or similar for Win 7/8); note that this path is settable in scantool, goto Edit->Properties->Folders).
From the V7 tunetool you can save a tune file as .ctz, go File->Save Tuning File As, and select .ctz as the type.

Starting from scratch as my laptop is down again, just going to use BBX and my desktop now hopefully. I previously had no efianything on my desktop so I downloaded everything last night, then setup my v2 per this thread, updated bootblock and firmware etc. Went out this morning and read my current tune, it said it saved and I have view the file name on my v2 still but I can't open or transfer it to my desktop in any way. I took the SD card out and my pc doesn't even recognize that there is a card in the slot. Its worth noting that the V2 wouldn't read my tune until I went to Options> Filesystem> Format filesystem. Then it read it and said saved and listed the filename. I thought everything at the beginning of this thread would have that covered..? Where might I have gone wrong and/or which efi program is supposed to read files from the v2?

Copying files to/from V2:
First, from the V7 tunetool, save your .tun files as .ctz
Then copy those .ctz files to your V2:
- start V8 EFILive Explorer (EE),
- goto Data Files tab,
- click Home,
- upper pane (PC): locate the .ctz files,
- lower pane (V2): go into the Tune folder,
- copy/paste/drag the .ctz files from the upper pane (PC) to the lower pane (V2),
- exit EE.
to copy logs from V2 to PC is the copy/paste from lower pane (V2) to upper pane (PC).

That message will be displayed when the firmware version in the FlashScan device is not compatible with the V7.5 software that is installed on your PC. Either youupdated the firmware, or updated the software but not both. To get everything operational, you need to download and install the latest V7.5 and V8 software from here: http://www.efilive.com/latest/cat/download-efilive
After installing you should run the options:
Start->All Programs->EFILive->V8->Check for Updates
and
Start->All Programs->EFILive->V7.5->Check for Updates
to ensure you get the latest updates.
Then once, the V8 software is installed (and fully updated), run the V8 EFILive_ScanAndTune software and click on the [Check Firmware] button on the main screen. That will update your V2 firmware so that it is compatible with the latest V7.5 software (that you shoudl have also installed and updated).

Is this old thread that Joecar wrote still compatable with latest updates that have .ctz files as normal.
I tried to set this up, and noticed quite a few differences.
i want to log some of the e38 t43 pids that arent in V7.5 such as TUTD
I did get a warning once about large SD cards can be a problem, and i am using the smallest one I could find these days which is 8gb....
Is this a problem???
When I tried to log with BBL I got a checksum error
I dont get/understand a few things with the BBL..... is there a tutorial that explains what can be done with the V2, and why you would use it and benefits to log with it rather than scan tool???
I must admit, I get a little nervous when making changes to my system, as the last thing you want is a disaster, especially when you have tunes to do the next day, and so I get a little reluctant to fix things that aint broke, even when it comes to updates..... am I alone in this field???
I really appreciate the work and time, that goes into threads like this one from Joecar, and others that make up this great forum, which I have learnt so much from.

Yes, compatible with .ctz, see posts #1 and #2.
As indicated in post #1, goto F5: BBX, and create one or more pidlists for your ECM/TCM.
What is your V8 software build version...?
What is your V2 firmware version...?
You can log with V2 only (Black Box Logging, BBL) so you don't have to bring your laptop with you in your vehicle.
With V2 you can also read from PCM and write to PCM without needing a laptop (you do a laptop to edit a tune).

...You're not alone...
The idea is to schedule updates to V7/V8 software and V2 firmware so that you can have a few days leeway in case something goes wrong... generally when something goes wrong it gets sorted out fairly quickly.

Hey Joe, My V8 is V8.2.2.262
and V2 is 2.07.07
I did make a PID list, but I may have done that wrong, as I called it T43play and then selected both the e38 and t43 controllers????
Anyway everything else seemed ok, but couldnt find a couple of PIDs that I usually use in V7,5 Dynamic cyl air for one....
The error code when I hook up V2 alone once I have selected evrything like you say and then start id $0185
Cheers
Blacky
December 22nd, 2014, 09:23 PM
You can look up error code here: Start->All Programs->EFILive-V8->Documents->EFILive Error Codes
$0185 F_ERR_NOTFOUND A file or folder was not found.
You may need to copy a required file to FlashScan or AutoCal using EFILive_Explorer.
Or you may need to format the target file system, see description for error $0182 above.
If you're getting checksum errors when data logging, it may be that the SD Card is failing or FlashScan is having trouble communicating with it correctly. Which could also explain the $0185 errors.
Try using EFILive Explorer to copy 10 ro 20 *.ctz files onto the card. If they all copy onto the card without error then there is likely nothing seriously wrong with the card or with FlashScan's ability to communicate with it.
The purpose of BBL (Black Box Logging) is to allow you to collect data logs without having to drag your laptop out to the vehicle.
Some PIDs were renamed when moving from V7.5 to V8. A list of renamed PIDs can be found in the file \Program Files (x86)\EFILive\V7.5\Configuration\sae_generic.txt
Open that file with Notepad and search for the section *BBLV7 it lists the renamed PIDs in that section.
Plus all _DMA PIDs have been renamed to just _M in V8, so E38.APCYL_DMA becomes just APCYL_M.

Connect V2 to vehicle OBD-II port (V2 should power on).
Connect V2 to wideband serial port (using null modem cable/adapter).
From V2 LCD/keypad do: F1 Scan Tool -> F2 Data Logging -> F3 Display WO2
You will have to first configure your V2 to read the serial comms from your wideband, do this:
1. F4 Options
2. F1 Setup
3. F1 Edit Settings
4. set Ser Pids to Yes.
5. set COM port to Wide-O2
6. set WO2 Type to <choose your wideband>.
7. for the ECM (e.g. AFR1500) wideband, also set the Id # for each bank.
8. press the Cancel button multiple times to back out of the menu tree.

My tunes work fine, its data logging I'm having trouble with. When I select pid list and press 0/power I get the error message.
