Can you try reading it using the V8 software?
Also, please make sure the firmware is up to date in your FlashScan device. You can do that by clicking on the [Check Firmware] button in the main screen of the V8 software.

The flash keeps freezing means (to me) that you are programming the ECM. Yet you say you are only trying to read the ECM, so I'm a bit confused.
If you could please provide some quality information then I can help you figure out what is going wrong.

What firmware version is in your FlashScan device?
Have you tried using the V8 software instead of the V7 software to read the controller?
If you have tried the V8 software, there will be a trace file of the attempt(s) in the folder: \My Documents\EFILive\V8\trace.
Please find the trace file that matches your attempted read (based on the date/time in the trace file's file name) and send it to me at paul@efilive.com.

Until I've seen what's in the trace file, speaking on the phone to you won't be much help.

Paul
