View Full Version : 24x SBC and LT1 Conversions with both CKP and CMP in Timing Cover

For much of this year EFI Connection has been working on a new crank/cam signal conversion for both SBC and LT1 engines. We set out to accomplish two things...

Eliminate crank signal issues where aftermarket double row timing sets are used. This has never been an issue with all double row timing sets, but occasionally we have received feedback where a double row timing set is the culprit in moving the crank reluctor out of the sensor range. A new reluctor design (and compatible sensor) have resolved this problem.
Move the cam signal to the face of the cam timing sprocket - just like a Gen IV LS-Series engine. For SBC installations, this eliminates the adjustment of the Vortec distributor to get the cam signal in proper relationship with the crank signal. For LT1 engines, this eliminates the use of our cam sensor housing in the front of the timing cover and provides an opportunity to make a higher resolution cam reluctor (cam signal on a larger diameter face).


Both solutions are accomplished with the new 24x SBC and LT1 conversions.

This conversion kit consists of a new billet aluminum timing cover (manufactured in-house), 24x crank reluctor (manufactured in-house), CKP sensor, Cloyes 9-3545X9 billet double roller timing set with custom cam sprocket (machined in-house for 1x CMP signal), and Gen IV LS-Series CMP sensor. The only caveats are the requirement of a crank balancer no thicker than production GM 1996-up (which is about 1.325") and the requirement of a step nose camshaft (like 1987-up hydraulic roller engines). We will probably work with Cloyes again this year to develop a new timing set for flat nose camshaft applications, but there is nothing we can do about the balancer thickness requirement. There's no room to move the crank reluctor and sensor closer to the engine because of the timing set. More options at http://www.eficonnection.com/eficonnection/24xSBC.aspx.
