Shuttle broke apart during re-entry after hot gasses penetrated left wing via damage sustained by a piece of foam strijing the RCC heat panel at a speed differential of over 500mph (Shuttle was supersonic, but the foam had slowed some by the time it hit the wing)

Condolences to the families, friends of these brave people. And to others involved in the Space Program who have fallen as well. Lest we forget, and let us honour their contributions with continued future human spaceflight.

Truly sad to see all those great people lost in one paragraph. Contributions to science and technology from the space program is huge, but as we can see this is a dangerous journey.

God Bless all those lost as well as the entire program for the future!

I am sorry but I see NASA (Not Any Science Achieved) a big waste of taxpayer money.
I would like to ask Musk and others (Lockheed Martin, Boeing, McDonald Douglas etc..) if space is so profitable why aren't they funding it themselves and not looking to the taxpayers to fund it? Ever wonder that yourself?
The advancements that have came from the space race are now used to generate large sums of cash for big business, yet the taxpayer's who funded the research and development get no royalties or reparation for the use of their money only more taken for more profit for big businesses.
Cut NASA and save mankind!
And I agree, 21 lives are not worth the small benefits that have came from their loss of life.

All of it except military type stuff is available for free to anyone! The USA overall has profitted from this, not just some companies.

I'm sure others have lost their lives in this pursuit of space travel. It is a dangerous field. But this guy obviously qualifies as an Astronout and was actually in space with the test flight that took his life.

Yes, it's true. Despite the fact that a lot of money is spent on space exploration from taxes - they made huge progress in this field:
- Discovery of exoplanets in the habitable zone
- They found traces of microorganisms at the site of an ancient Martian lake
- The border of the solar system is crossed
- Successful landing of the third generation rover

And that is not even all.
