View Full Version : Can I do it myself?

I have a 2006 LS2/E40 that I'm swapping into an E36 ('98 3-series BMW). I've done a bunch of research and have determined that if the E40 is flashed to the OS of an '05 SSR (along with an SSR throttle pedal), I can have cruise control functionality. The OS on the GTO E40 needs the PIM/BCM in order to have cruise control.
I'll also need the typical adjustments; VATS delete, rear O2 delete, skip shift delete, etc. I've read that EFI Live also allows the PCM to be programmed with a different VIN, so I can use the VIN from my BMW.
Having zero experience with any kind of PCM tuning/programming, is it likely that I could accomplished the OS flash on my own if I were to purchase the software? Is the '05 SSR OS available for download? It seems if I were to pay someone to flash the OS and make the other adjustments (VAT's delete, etc.) I'd be halfway towards the purchase price of the software.
I just don't want to brick my PCM or otherwise screw things up. I'm an LSx newbie with zero PCM programming experience.
Thanks.

I not any kind of an expert, but I don't see how flashing the '05 SSR OS gives you cruise control. How do you engage it? What is your set speed button connected to? There must still be a BCM of some sort communicating to the ECU in the SSR.
Changing the VIN to a BMW number seems pointless other than what is reported back on scanner even if the ECU accepts such a number.
The VATS, O2, skip shift deletes are all easy and straight forward. Have you considered a GTO BCM and gauge cluster? On the LS1GTO board they have learned a few tricks to edit cluster settings and messages with a '95 LT1 tuning cable. On the other hand, if I were swapping a GTO LS2 into something else, I'd be looking hard at an LS1B 411 PCM rather than use the E40.

I am sure of this as I have communicated with several swappers who have GTO engines/PCM's and have had both Speartech and Current Performance perform the SSR flash to successfully provide cruise functionality. Of this I am sure. The cruise is activated with the stock cruise stalk on the steering column. In some aplications, relays are required to reverse polarity.

I will be keeping my dash cluster stock and all functionality will be retained. There's no reason to switch to a 411 PCM. The SSR flash will give me cruise control. The ONLY function the E40 lacks compared to the 411 is the ability to generate an A/C request signal. And I've already researched how I will get around that.
I'm not looking to reinvent the wheel. I'm just wondering if I can handle performing an entire OS flash on my own, if I purchase the software.

Vin # in ecm has nothing to do with emissions or OBD2 testing. You can probably find the OS file you want at tunefiledepot.com

The VIN wasn't really the meat and potatoes of my question.

Turning off the O2s and VATS is easy. Dialing in the tune for any mods is more difficult but completely doable. Just get a wideband O2.
