View Full Version : 58 tooth reluctor wheel in an 04' GTO?

Buddy of mine is swapping a stroker into an 04' GTO. He called me and said the motor has a 58 tooth reluctor wheel and only EFI Live can make the conversion. Is there on OS swap or segment swap that will convert the 24 tooth math for the 58? Will he just have to get a GenIV ECM from an 05' and swap those out? I am not familiar with this. Any help would be appreciated.

Two options....

pull the crank out of the new motor and get a 24 tooth wheel pressed on.

Swapping the ECM will only work if the car is never going on the street as the BCM and dash will not readily talk to the later ECM. Also if it's anauto, the current PCM controls that as well, so you'd need a new gear box.

Generally, the converter box is what most people use.

Simon.

Thanks Simon. Swapping the crank or ring is what I suggested originally but he wanted to know if there was any other way. He had heard of the Lingenfelter but has seen bad reviews. So, they are pulling the crank and replacing it now.

The early model of the converter drew power from the CAS 5V supply, from the PCM. In hot weather, this could lead to the power transistors overheating and shutting down into "thermal protection" mode, basically disabling the CAS and converter, so the engine would stop until everything cooled down.

The new version has a separate power supply and no longer causes the thermal shutdown, so it should be fine to use.

One other thing to remember is that a different CAM sprocket may be needed, as the GEN IV ran a different cam timing signal. The converter box changes both the crank and cam signals to suit the LS1 PCM.
