View Full Version : New User, Can't pull .bin down from PCM - I'm sure I'm doing something wrong..

I feel so stupid sometimes..
I've read through the pdf files and searched on the forum but can't seem to find my answer.
I have EFILive V2 and I am trying to pull down the existing .bin files of several 12200411 PCMs to get a feel for how all this works.
I am utilizing the EFI Connection "Professional Series Benchtop Programming" box and connector to the PCM and then connecting EFILive to this box.
When I try to pull down the existing .bin, the software (I tried both 7.5 and 8.0) messages state that it cannot connect to the PCM and gives me a "$0101 No Data Received" message. When I try to select "Read Tune" directly from the V2 menu, I get "Required Config File(s) Not Found".
I have tried this several times on two different 12200411 PCMs so I have a hard time believing I have two PCMs from different sources that could be bad- I'm more inclined to believe that I'm just an idiot and missed something fundamental or perhaps there is something amiss with the "Professional Series Benchtop Programming" box or cable I received from EFI Connection.
Any suggestions or advice to get me going would be hugely appreciated.
Thank you!

With the 12200411 PCM's plugged in and powered up you should see one of the yellow LED's on the V2 blinking, this indicates that messages from the PCM are being received. This should happen even without the V2 plugged in to the USB port, if you don't see that then there is either a problem with the PCM's or the bench set up you have. EFI Connection's do good work so maybe check your power supply is ok rather than suspect the harness.

The AC adapter has 12 volts and the switch on the box lights up when it's turned on.
EFILive powers up when I have it connected to the box so I know that at least the power from the box is making it to the EFILive box.
Unfortunately, after the initial power-up, no LEDs are flashing on the EFILive box.
It seems that there is something wrong between the PCM and the box- I checked out the adapter cable from the Blue PCM connector to the other end connector and all 4 wires are good. Now if they are in the proper locations, that I haven't confirmed.
Since I'm having the exact same behavior with 2 PCMs that were purchased from entirely different sources 10 months apart, I just have to suspect this issue is outside the PCM.
Thoughts?

It is acting like you have battery power only - and not getting ignition power.
My benchtop setup uses both a battery switch and an ignition switch.
If I provide the system with battery power only, the V2 will boot up, but none of the LEDs come on - until I turn on ignition power.

The EFI Connection box (cable) has an orange wire (+12) on pin C1-20 and a pink (Ignition) on pin C1-19.
I can check to ensure I am actually receiving +12 on both pins with I turn on the box.
I'll post my results.

OK, I did some more digging.
My 80-pin blue connector has 4 wires attached:
C1-19 Pink Ignition
C1-20 Orange +12
C1-58 Purple Data
C1-60 Black TPS Ground?
The pin-out descriptions I got directly from EFI Connection's documentation.
C1-19 and C-20 does in fact have +12 when I turn on the box and I use C1-60 as the ground.
What I find odd is that (again, per EFI Connection's doc), C1-1 and C1-40 are "PCM Ground" so I'm not quite sure why my harness has C1-60 (TPS Ground) pinned?
Could this be my issue or are all these ground pins internally connected anyway?

Those pinouts will work fine for a benchtop harness (C1 pin 60 is a PCM ground - MAP, etc.)
I am wondering now if the Serial Data signal is making it to the V2.
Pop the blue plastic cover off the C1 connector - and confirm the pins (wires) in use are fully seated, and stay seated / locked (i.e. don't move very much, if at all).
The next option is to confirm the pin / wire placement at the other end of the programming harness - probably a 6 wire connector of some sort - that then plugs into the EFI Connection interface.

The pins in the blue connector appear to be secure and don't move within the connector so I believe that is all good.
It's more like a 12 pin connector on the other end and all 4 wires all test good to this connector.
Now if this connector is pinned correctly, I'll need to confirm with EFI Connection (unless I open the box and trace it out).
Any idea what is all inside this box? Seems with 4 wires and 3 being power and ground, I'm not sure what kind of magic happens in there?

Sorry - no idea on the make up of the EFI Connection's interface.
Another way to confirm if the Serial Data is making it through the EFI Connection's interface is to connect a PCM, power up the system, and connect any generic OBDII hand-held scanner, and try to check for DTCs etc.

Well I was able to get some troubleshooting info from EFI Connection and I was able to determine that something with the switch box is amiss.
The 'data' connection is coming out on pin 3 vs pin 2 on the OBDII connector on the switch box-
I just hope that wouldn't have damaged my PCMs or EFILive controller in any way?
They are sending me a replacement switch box, which I think is great customer service!
Hopefully, I'll be in business soon-
Thank you so much for your help TAZ and GMPX!
