View Full Version : Flashing MIL after 24x conversion

I did the 24x conversion on my 99 5.7 Vortec over the last few days and about a minute into driving I get a flashing MIL. Doesn't feel like it missing and all gauges are ok. I started with a stock 01 Silverado 5.3 tune and changes all fuel, airflow and spark tables to my old 5.7 tune. I left the dwell table alone though.
Any ideas? I was logging when it happened if that helps.

I can post the tune and log file when I get home.

Do I have an improper catalytic converter setting?

Did you do a CASE relearn...?

No I did not. When I did my original 5.7 swap I had a MIL telling me to do one. No MIL this time. But still required? Is that causing me to misfire?

Do I need a relearn even if I'm not getting p1336?

Yes, PCM now sees a different crank rotating assembly and different CKP sensor...
during CASE relearn the PCM learns the rate of deceleration during misfire... this is what it then uses to detect misfires.

Fair enough. Now if only I could get the relearn to happen. I have c1 32 and 34 grounded. TCC has 12v without brake and 0 with brakes.
I am however getting a p0706 'transmission range switch performance' even though I have a manual segment swap. Why would this be? I was getting it before I grounded 32 and 34 also.
The p0706 does not produce a MIL. It only shows on scan tool

Also gm.tstate00 pid says 'no' for in p/n while monitoring. is the pcm seeing this and not letting CASE work?

you might need to swap the trans segment from a manual trans file with same OS id (there may or may not be one available).

My summary page states that trans type is 'manual'. Why would it looking at auto trans range selection?

if it's derived from the VIN then it is meaningless in regards to what the calibration actually contains.

I posted my tune on the first page. Post two I think. When I open tune it states 5.3L as engine and Manual as Transmissionn type.

This is my problem. I have 32 and 34 grounded and PCM still thinks I am in Drive. P/N status is 'NO'
What do I do?

Can you move this thread to the appropriate category so I can get some more views? I didn't realize I posted it in the Scanning forum.

Do a segment swap from an auto trans vehicle. Then ground C1-32 and C1-34 during the relearn procedure and see if that works. If it does then you can flash your manual trans segment back in.

Worked great, Lextech. I am now able to do crank relearns.
Unfortunately I am still getting a large amount of misfiring on cylinder 4 and 7 after this conversion. New ckp, swapped coils with 4 and 8, new wires... ran great before the swap.

You are using a Gen3 calibration on a traditional smallblock Chevy engine. They don't have the same firing order. Check the wiring portion for the firing order of the coils and injectors.

I'm aware of that and I don't think it would run so great if they were crossed. Cyls 2 and 3 are also swapped and they don't produce any misfires.

Ya, I didn't see your other post until after I commented. The only reason I brought it up is that I have seen other people not have the firing order correct on the 24x deal.

I just changed the misfire tables of the 5.3 to match my old 5.7 tune. I'm hoping they are just false misfires (I can't feel them). The 5.3 has smaller values in the tables and has a greater range of them. Maybe the 5.3 misfire table is fine tuned to its cam profile (114lsa compared to the 111lsa of the Vortec 5.7)? But only misfiring in two cylinders and not all of them? But cylinders 4 and 7 are references from the same spot on the reluctor wheel, correct?

I don't think so. 4 and 7 are not companion cylinders.
PS: Your gas gauge doesn't work, correct?

I was thinking of the firing orders
18436572 5.7
18726543 5.3
Two crank revolutions to light all cylinders and cyl 7 fires on the third quarter of full crank revolution. Cyl 4 fires on the same spot next time the crank goes around. Same spot on the crank is initiating that spark, right?
Pcm thinks it's firing cyl 7 but inj and coul are wired to cyl 4. Same goes with cyl 2 and 3.

Funny you mention that, since the conversion whenever I brake hard or turn corners my fuel gauge has been dropping to empty and then it slowly notches it's way back up. What made you point that out?

... What made you point that out? ...
The commonly used switch for the PCM PWM output to the fuel gage is disabled in the tune that you posted. Most Vortec (Black Box) PCMs have this output enabled .... most LS1-B PCMs do not.

Interesting. Fuel gauge works fine. Just now and then it will go to empty on decel but then come back up

Now that I have this conversion done and everything seems to be running smooth (misfiring sorted out, just bumped the mid values about 75%), can I now run the 5.3 spark tables since I am (assuming) capable of a little more timing with CNP setup?

Does your gas gauge work properly now?
