View Full Version : 5 Volt Source available for the ECM for a potentiometer?

Are any of the pins labeled "not used" on the ECM pinout actually hot for a 5 volt reference/source? I'm trying to use a potentiometer for my DSP5 switch and would like to use an ECM pin for the 5 volt reference. Right now I am using the EGR 5 volt source for the potentiometer.
I have a DSP5 switch with the fixed positions but am trying something different.

What exactly are you trying to do?? The DSP-5 signal input pin already floats high (internal pullup), and measures resistance between the pin and ground

Ok, the pot I have varies from 1k -2.5k and would only provide a small voltage range for selecting the different maps. Using the pot as designed (source, signal, ground) provides a 0.5 - 4.5 voltage range. If it is measuring resistance and not input voltage then I could use it based on the 1.5k variation and tighten up the voltage settings in EFI, right?
Thanks for the help.

Sounds like a bad idea to use a pot, the switches (using fixed resistors) provide the exact increments in voltage the ECM needs to determine which tune to use.

x2...many times, lower quality pots can be jumpy and "spike" when adjusting them, which could cause the ECM to sporadically change tunes unexpectedly...

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it. Looks like the pot is not the way to go.
