Looking at monitoring my STFT and looking at the bbx screen, it lists sub pids when i select the main O2 pid. Are the sub pids automatically added or is it just saying it needs those pids added manually as well to work?

The Sub-pids will be added automatically when you add the primary/main PID

just wondering as it didn't count sub pids towards the pid count at the bottom of the bbx screen

You should be able to confirm by looking at the bottom left hand corner in the Selected PIDs screen afterwards.

The pids O2SxxV are "compound" pids.
I prefer logging HO2Sxx and SHRTFTx instead.

What is a compound pid? and why is it not preferred? also for the ls1b it lists a maximum of 24 pids, is this a recommended max for logging speed? or something else?

"compund" pid (sorry, I couldn't think of a better term) is the pid with multiple field content, e.g. the pid O2S11V contains both O2 voltage and SHRTFT.
You can log it and use it... it occupies 2 pid channels (the separate pids HO2S11 and SHRTFT1 each occupy 1 pid channel, so it's the same).
I prefer (it's my preference) to have the pids separate because there are logs where I want something else instead of SHRTFT.

What about the 24 pid limit? is it a hard limit or a recommended limit for logging speed?

What about the 24 pid limit? is it a hard limit or a recommended limit for logging speed? The 24 pid channel count is not a limit, but a recommendation to achieve the fastest logging frame rate...
( most pids occupy 1 pid channel, some occupy 2, and some 4 )
in Stream-Fast mode logging from an LS1B PCM:
1 to 24 pid channels logs at 10 frames/s
25 to 48 pid channels logs at 5 frames/s
( a frame containing all the pids selected for logging )
see scantool user manual pdf Appendix E "Scan Modes".
