Unofficial E47 (LUZ) Full Tuning Support

So as many of you probably know, I took matters into my own hands and added support for the mini diesel. You can find all the goodies, installation, etc. on the GitHub site. (https://github.com/Snipesy/Cruze)

Read the disclaimers. EFI Live has absolutely nothing to do with this, except with the hardware and tuning software.

The Cruze itself uses a similar ECU found in the LML. Most of the maps you would find in the LML are found in cax file, but not all of them. Some areas are underdeveloped, particular timing and pilot quantities, other areas are just messy. These ECMs are just a pain to work with.

To answer 90% of questions…

Q – What OS does this support?
A – 12662377 and 12658788. Do not use 12681104.

Q – Will this be updated?
A – Yesss. Although at this time the cax is mostly completed.

Q - Can I add XXX?
A – Maybe, but I can only dedicate so much time to a free project. If it’s not something major don’t expect a miracle. If you find a massive flaw though I can be pretty quick at fixing those. So do tell.

Q – DSP?
A - Nope.

Q – I want a read.
A – You can’t read the ECM for the same reason as the LML. Your best bet is to find someone who can read it (not me, sorry).

Q – Why are you releasing this to the public?
A – Guess I'm too nice.

Q – So what do you want?
A – The worst thing you can do is just use my work to make your millions without anyone knowing about my involvement. Because of that… Using this commercially will require a license. You can read more about that is on the GitHub page. This still costs absolutely nothing however, so if you want to give there is a donate option on the github page. Donating doesn't magically unlock any hidden maps. Nothing is hidden.

Sadly for the Diesel Cruze it has been cut, I think they only sold 6,000 or so and the ECM used on the US model was only used on the US model so don't worry about people making 'millions' from your work :hihi:.

Less than 1% of automobile owners opt for computer tuning ... your math was based on 100% of the vehicles that were produced receiving custom tuning.

I wasn't going to be so harsh Taz and burst Snipesy's bubble :lookaround: , but sadly that is probably about the reality of it with 90% of them probably not even realising a car can be retuned for better performance. A person that buys a Corvette or Camaro has modifications in mind the moment they leave the dealership.

Pretty sad it didnt take off. The little Cruze has teeth, but just doesn't know how to use them. GM is aiming toward quiet, high mpg engines and not loud, high torque diesels.

Can't blame GM though. They are just making what the majority wants. Now they are going to use a 1.6L which is quite literally built to hide the fact it's a diesel. I doubt it will have near the potential of its older brother.

Intent was to be realistic, not harsh. Wasn't sure if your earlier post was serious or sarcastic ... glad to hear it was sarcasm (i.e. no bubble burst).

Undertaking to write a CAX file is something that all experienced tuners should try at least once in their careers. It will make you a better tuner, by better understanding how the controller programming works, and you will more fully appreciate the magnitude of work that defining a single operating system (OS) represents.

At last count I have written 200+ CAX files ... some much larger than yours. These are more a labour of intellectual pursuit than a money making venture. Only a handful of the CAX files that I have written ever covered the cost of their respective R&D.

Rough. What did you replace it with if I may ask?

For 'tuning' I'd say the cax has anything you would want. Certainly could be presented better, so I'm working on a bit of a face lift to make it easier to work with.

The issue comes when you want to start tearing components out. Getting that to work is not easy. Mainly because these Bosch ECUs are masterful at making things look spaghetti.

Could be useful, changing the type will work a bit differently than changing the activation table to 32768 (32768 effectively signs the short int so it becomes 1000000000000000, a negative number). In reality I think it'll be more just a quick reference. Should also mention that in reality they would be a crap ton of "X | Not Reported" (or a null type would maybe be more accurate). But because the Bosch DTC tables have a crap ton, I filtered all of the unused/reserved spots. I think the tables have somwhere around 900 elements each.

Also added some tables used for said DTCs, like desired boost upper/lower error everyone is familiar with. They look kind of funky... Hopefully the scaling is correct.

Other stuff as well. I added the MAF Sensor curve... Had that for awhile, but I'm not really sure how that thing is scaled, so I just did a bunch of logging and approximated. Should be pretty close though. Additionally there is support for the older OS. Turns out they are almost exactly identical so I'm told.

Good news making the tables is done and over with. I had a script match all the indexes together, and make a cax for me.

Also look what I found. It's the tables that calculate the timing for the post injections. Interestingly mode 0 is pretty much just not used (it's blank).

The post stuff? Not sure. There is no real way to see if they work. There is no PID which will tell you how much each injection gives.... Because grr Bosch. On the plus side, they should *work*.

easy to calculate by total injection mm3 on stock, then on tuned while engine cold then later on warm.

maybe 5.24 mm3 on idle stock
maybe 4.24 mm3 on idle tuned
equates to 1 mm3 reduction total

All this for Post1 injections while engine cold and warming up.
But iam not sure if this works, just talking out of my head :)

But the issue is A. It gives unrecognized PCM error, and B. The values aren't right cause they just start from 392C0A, the first address. The good news is it does fill in the descriptions for the codes, and loads about a million times quicker on my laptop.

Care to throw me a bone here? It would work if they were all in a line, and I could just use one address, but you know that won't work here without lots of empty tables.

So if we have 126589.bin and 12662377.bin how do we open them. do we need to combine them and import it to an efi live? i thought efi could handle raw bins. I imported your cax files and it wont open the raw binaries

Don't combine them. Try opening them with the V8 tool, if that doesn't recongzie eitheir then there's something wrong with the bins. If it does, you didn't install the .cax files correctly.

Ah. I'm not sure, never done that before. I'd imagine you can stitch them together somehow... There's also probably more files than what you need...

The end result will be exactly 4MB or 4,194,304 bytes.

Also apparently the Cruze has two forms of limiting torque. Which means the two in the deprecated folder are actually what I am going to call the 'Master Torque Limiters'.

Whereas the others follow the traditional style, but I do not believe they are ever used... Which is annoying.

The less you lie the better the TCM will behave. I'm not sure exactly what gets sent between the TCM and ECM, but if it doesn't match the TCM will start doing some odd behavior when shifting. Not so much in WOT but more so in normal driving conditions.

Typically if you don't 'fool' the torque calculated by the ECM then the TCM will stay happy and shift well.
That is why tuning solely by the pulse map isn't ideal on auto vehicle because the final pulse time isn't in the torque calculation sent to the TCM. The engine might be making 600Nm through pulse table manipulation but the TCM is still being told it is making 400Nm....not good.

Unfortunately however the caculation is done it doesn't really take fuel into account. So if the 250 Nm row gives 300 nm the TCM will still misbehave. Honestly 80% of the work is toward creating a perfect torque to fuel table.

FYI. The newer OS GM released got pulled. It's really bad. All sorts of issues. Throw it in the recycling bin if you got it.

Got a letter in the mail about the release of the update, for the update...

it says that if you had your car in for the prior update, then you will get a new calibration flashed, if not you will get the calibration, and a new NOX #1 sensor

Hey everyone I haven't been active with EFI Live for quite some time (which I am sorry to say).

The github page (https://github.com/Snipesy) should have more than enough for anyone. I recently added example tunes. Those tunes come with no support and should just be used to reference in building your own, but they will work. The github even has a small wiki page (https://github.com/Snipesy/Cruze/wiki), which regardless of what engine you are tuning, new people may find helpful (not saying I am the best teacher, but there it is).

I originally intended to sell my efforts on the E47 in the forms of tunes (just as many of you guys have), but constant US EPA issues have led me to err on the side of caution even with emissions in tact tunes. This is just how things are going forward. So I'm officially calling it quits. I will not be working on the Cruze anymore (nor have I for a while). There are pieces unfinished with the cax (just like the LML). Anyone is free to pick it up if they desire (it is all open source).

It's not all a loss. I did make BiScan (used to be called GMX I think), which allows people to do regens and stuff for their LMLs. I am also working on a newer app called Gretio in my off time. It will be a 'scan tool' people can run on their phones and an OBD Link Device (and eventually comma ai pandas and maybe others). All of this is made possible from information I gained from the E47 Cruze. I am much better at developing software than tuning, so it's a nice fit for me.


To close I really hope everyone finds a place in the future. Most of the people reading this are going to be pretty bright. There are plenty of opportunities out there, both in the automotive aftermarket and other fields. Whatever happens, you'll get through it.

Snipesy, thanks for all your shared information on the E47 ECM. I know the car wasn't the big seller GM hoped for but those that were tuning them I am sure really appreciated all your free information on tuning them.

As much as people don't want to hear it everyone in this industry needs to consider a plan b, the changes in the automotive world over the last 4 or 5 years have been massive and I suspect in another 5 years the changes will be even more of a shift that will have people question the long term viability of what they do, this won't last forever for many reasons that can't be reversed.

Support for editing within V8 hasn't and wont happen. If you have a file made you can flash it with V8.
