View Full Version : Truck 5.3 e38 tune for manual trans

I'm clawing my way out of Gen3 and getting more involved in Gen4 but it is a slow process. We have a t56 put behind a bone stock 2011 5.3 truck engine. The 4/8 cylinder cut has been disabled but I can't decide what is the best way to tell this ecm to not care about it's lack of auto transmission. I have considered trying to work with a camaro LS3 manual trans tune, but then I would have to reinvent the engine tune for this bone stock 5.3 engine...that sounds like a bad idea. The other thought was just to not worry about it, turn off all the codes that might pertain to the auto trans, and see what happens. If I do NOT have a grounded pin at X1 Pin 1 then won't the ecm just think that there's an auto behind it and that it's in gear (aka a suitable condition for a manual trans engine to stay in). This option seems too easy, surely something in the tune would wig out if it didn't have any trans data, right???

Am I over thinking this? Any help is appreciated.

Ok, I got the engine to fire up and run on the engine stand. Wired it like and auto just left out all the TCM info. Grounding or not grounding x1 pin1 seems to have no effect on the PIDS that I am allowed to use with an e38. The engine doesn't seem to change at all so I'm thinking the fact that a tcm isn't wired in somewhere is basically killing a lot of info.

As others have encountered, I'm seeing my VSS read 158mph even with no VSS plugged in at all. I have searched and search, found many other people with the same issue, but no solution. Apparently having an automatic tune without a TCM causes this for some reason...

For the record, I hate the e38.

For the record, I hate the e38.

You are not alone! I could do practically anything with an LS1B, but have been working on an E38 lately and hate it! Glad I don't do much tuning any more...
