So I'm pretty new at this and could use some help trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong here. I have an E38 that came with a LY6/6l90e/magnaTcase driveline that I bought several years ago. Project got put on the backburner... I decided it was time to work on this some now and am trying to get my flashscan to read the E38. I built a benchtop harness and confirmed the wiring was correct from the J1 connector to the RJ45 that plugs into the flashscan using a DMM according to the tutorial: http://download.efilive.com/Tutorials/PDF/Bench%20Harness%20Tutorial.pdf. The harness I built has a switch to simulate 12V ignition and has 12V where it should be verified with the DMM.
So far with V7.5 scantool I get "ECM not detected" and with V8 I get "Error $0101: No data received", when I try to read the ECM. Attached screenshots.
What should I try next or is this thing bricked?
Thanks,
Mark

Did you select E38 manually or allow auto detect to find it?

Both error messages in the original post came from manually selecting E38 as the controller. Autodetect with V8 Scan and Tune only finds the Flashscan, does not recognize the controller. Hoping that since I'm new to this that I'm missing something that is obvious to others...

It really comes down to CAN and power. Have never seen a dead E38 that wouldnt say hello - but first time for everything. :)

Well, went back over the wiring diagrams, everything checked out fine from the RJ45 to the J1 connector with the DMM. Tested that +12V was present at J1 pins 19 and 47 when the "ignition switch" is on, tested that +12V is present on J1 20 when the benchtop harness is powered, checked grounds - all looked good... Just for giggles I tried swapping the CAN wires and that didn't work either.
Is it possible that this ECM could be completely blank, thought I read something about needing a Tech II to "initialize" a new blank controller before an operating system can be loaded?
Probably the next thing to do is look for another E38 at the salvage yard and see if I can talk to that.
Thanks for the responses

Yes, correct, can't flash the ECM unless the ECM is already flashed (i.e. not blank like a new one).
