Just wondering as a noob. .. what a segment swap does when swapping a 4L60E for a 4L80E ... does it reverse the B solenoid outputs to the trans and switches the tune to TCC using PWM only (instead of PWM and ON/OFF in the 60) by putting in a complete 4L80E tune ... or does it only do the codes/diagnostics? Have been wondering this.

It changes the pin functionality to match that of a factory vehicle (so change the solenoid output, PWM only). You have to seg swap BOTH the Transmission segment AND the Transmission Diagnostics segment to do this correctly, so it enables full diagnostic functionality as well.

You may have to also move a wire or two in the harness to the trans.

Yeah I know about the re-pin and need of a input speed sensor wired in ... would this work on a T42 TCM or is it only for the older stuff?

I've never tried it on a T42.

T42 you cannot segment swap. As it is a separate controller (TCM) from the PCM/ECM, you need to full flash an appropriate OS into it that has 4L80E support. I.E. Fullsize truck. Then you have to ensure that 80E OS will communicate with the ECM and OS pair of your choosing.

Segment swaps are (mainly) for LS1 PCMs. I have only used it for that, others may have used it for other things.
