Bricked ECM

What determines if an ecm will be bricked when flashed? I know there can be a lot of factors that play into it. Here's the example; the bricked ecm's hdw #12583660 and service number 12586242. The original tune was a 12585950 OS and the tune that bricked it is 12592618. Both are 1MB tunes and both are ls1b controlers. Why did flashing this tune onto it brick the ecm? I'm trying to avoid this in the future. Tunes attached.

I would also like to know the answer to this. I did a cal flash on my ECM and after turning off the ignition and waiting I tried to start it and got nothing....at all. Checked all fuses and relays and all good. Tried a cheap reader and it checked everything but could not find the ECM. My other question is if I need a new ECM do I need to buy another license to flash all my old ECMs info.

The bricked ecm is a 12586242. I was trying to install it in a 2005 CTS-V that originally had a 12589462 ecm. The CTS-V calibration bricked the 12586242.

Was that a stock CTS-V calibration?

Yes, it was a bone stock calibration.

Ok on Monday I'll have a dig though our ECM collection and see if I have some matching numbers to yours and try to duplicate the issue with your files.

was your voltage good the entire time?

I had a dip in voltage once on the bench and bricked a pcm. Got to be careful.

Not sure on voltage, but battery was fully charged and cranked right up after replacing the ecm. I guess my main question was, is there a rule of thumb for what OS's are compatible with a given ecm? Are all 1MB OS's compatible with all 1MB ecms? Are all 512kb OS's are compatible with all 512kb ecms?

As far as I know and have experienced- yes.

I've never had a controller/OS mismatch cause a brick.
