An attempt was made to read or program a controller that cannot be unlocked using the standard GM keys.

If you know the key that was used to lock the controller, please use the unlock option in the EFILive software to unlock the controller before attempting to read or re-flash the controller again.

I belive the truck was previously tuned but I don't know by who
Or what to do at this point

I believe the ecm was previously tuned because there was loose wires hanging off it bought it from the dealership can I bring it back to them and have them flash/ unlock it

The dealership will not be able to unlock it either.
There is probably a few people that can unlock ECM's, I can say that these guys do them but you do need to send your ECM to them.

The answer to your question depends on how the controller was originally locked.

If the controller was locked using EFILive's Auto-locking feature, then a full flash (which you could do) would unlock the controller. Did you attempt to read or flash the controller to get your $0537?

If the controller was manually locked using a custom key, flashing over the top will not be sucessful. If manual locking was used, then there are 2 possible scenarios:

If the key is generated by the tuner, and the tuner provides you the key you will be able to unlock the controller using that key.
If the key is generated by FlashScan, then only FlashScan devices with the same License Number can be used to unlock the controller.

If the controller is manually locked, and you either don't have the key, or know who's FlashScan was used to originally flash your ECM, your only option is a someone like wait4me (detailed earlier in this thread) who can use "brute force" to unlock the ECM.

I tried reading it and flashing it and still got the same results.
Can I get a reman ecm and have it flashed to the truck then upload my tunes that way can't be without my truck need it for work daily

Yes you can do that.

The dealer, just like yourself will not have permission to flash the ECM unless you have the key.

If you had a communications error because of something interferring on the can bus, or because something was mechanically unsound you would not be getting an error code that detailed the ECM was locked.

The error code list isn't generic - there are 41 very detailed pages of error codes breaking down the errors received.

We have ecms that i can load your tuning onto and send it. Call for the costs. Most likely your ecm will be a repairable core but i can put it on the bench harness and see what is up with it.

You'd have had a different error if your software was out of date. $0537 is controller is locked with custom key.
