Is step 1 supposed to occur by plugging the EFI live controller into the OBD port while in the car or is it supposed to occur within the software interface where the software attempts to query a file on the disk?

Yes, you need to plug your FlashScan into the OBDII port, turn key to the "key on engine off", then attempt to read the controller using V8 Scan & Tune. It will import unauthorized auth code into the F3->F8 Authorization area.

If you are using an AutoCal, you can also try reading the controller using your AutoCal, then synchronizing it with V8 S&T to import the unauthorized auth-code. If that doesnt work, you will need to contact your tuner.
