View Full Version : Relocating Factory egt sensor and using high presssure map senor?

Yo EFI!

I've spent some time searching the internet for answers to a few questions and I'm coming up empty handed.

1- Why not relocates the factory egt sensor into the manifold to get accurate pre-turbo temps? If it cannot read high enough, we should be able to wire in the appropriate aftermarket sensor and scale appropriately given software support.
2- No ability to upgrade the factory map sensor to read higher pressure. I see a few options out there for sensors but I do not see options to scale any engine sensors in EFI live.

I realize everyone relies on aftermarket gauges but there is no actual safety in using them (no de-fuel or boost limitation) other than a warning you may have programmed. Being able to monitor accurate high pressure boost and egt sensors through the factory ecu would allow us to tune quite a bit of safety for overboost and overtemp or low fuel pressure scenarios. I can tune a modern gasser to 800+hp and make it almost idiot proof because of the control available with EFI live, no so with diesels. Maybe I'm asking too much, I'm not a software engineer so I rely 100% on the software provided and it seems the diesel tuning options are limited if you are a non-engineer.....

The constraints that tend to happen with the factory ECM are dictated by what the factory designed it to do in the first place.
Something like using an EGT sensor to perform another task such as say boost or torque limiting based on the temperature reading isn't in the ECM code, 'someone' has to write the new code that makes the ECM perform that function. But you have to remember nobody has the source code for these ECM's but Cummins, nobody has a 100% understanding of what everything is doing in the ECM so adding in functions like that is very difficult and sometimes simply not possible with the limited knowledge the aftermarket has.
It would be like hooking up a WBO2 to a LS1 PCM and hoping it is able to keep track of AFR's throughout the entire AFR range, it can't because the factory never gave it the smarts to be able to do that.
From an EFILive perspective it is always a balance between keeping majority of tuners happy and updated vs things that minimal users would ever use that require a lot of R&D. Admittedly the 1% that like to tinker outside of what EFILive offers have probably reduced the request we get to expand what we currently offer in the software.

Ah, had no idea about the source code. What you say makes sense, I just didn't realize I was in the 1%.... Figured I would ask the questions to see if I was overlooking something. I wasn't really looking for changing output/input controls, more so upgrading factory sensors (with scaling) to read higher boost, egt ect. as the important ones. Again, I'm no software engineer/code guy so I may just be asking questions incorrectly. Thanks for the clarification, I'm prob just overthinking this stuff!

Also, I think I've been confused when looking at "MAP psi" vs "boost psi" in logs. Map maxes out at 37psi and boost was showing all the way up to 46PSI.... I see calibrated power and a few other outfits using high pressure map sensors just don't know how they scale for it but thats prob why they make the big bucks!

Ok I see what you mean now, I did think you meant re-purposing the inputs for other functions.
It shouldn't be too hard for us to add in the MAP scaler for the 2010-2012 ECM next time we are working on them, just keep in mind they are there for 2013+ if you ever need to do it on one of those.

Got it. That makes sense why I see more options for the 2013+. I'm working on an 2007.5 right now and will be doing a compound setup and would like too accurately monitor high pressure boost and limit it just in case.

2007.5 is a different ECM again to 2010 you said you needed the scaling for :nixweiss:

HPP released an EGT kit to do this a couple years ago, it is fairly popular. There is also a drop-in 10 bar MAP sensor for 03-07 5.9 and 07.5-18 6.7 Cummins. They'd be happy to change the MAP sensor scale in your supplied base if using their sensor.
