Internet security and antivirus

I'm using Norton Internet Security and Norton Antivirus, the auto update does not work, and I generally hate the two products (came with my Dell)... :bash:
and their license is about to expire in about 1 week... :cheers:

does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should be using (and why)...?

I use McAfee at home, and NAV at work. Never had a problem with McAfee, and would use it at work if all our vendors supported it's use.

The only way to go is Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition, It does Antivirus and mal-ware. I run it on over 2000 computers and server, Netware\Linux and Windows 2k3 Server but it works just as well on one desktop. It also uses alot less resources then others.

The fact your live update is not working is not a good thing, could be a virus or maybe your subscription is out of date

Firewall, no need to run anything other then the default firewall in winXP SP2, Norton Internet Security cause more problems then it can fix...

Norton & Symantec aren't as "top of the line" anymore as they have been until a couple years ago ... especially the personal firewall part of either one is far from reliable ... I've seen test results in magazines that would strongly suggest to use anything but them ...

I've been running the free Sygate personal firewall, and it's working pretty well and reliable ... anyway, Symantec bought up Sygate (presumably to get rid of the competition), so the .com-site is offline (redirected to symantec), but the german site is still available, including the download of the program ...

Just to throw another one in the mix. I use NOD32 (www.nod32.com) (http://www.eset.com%29), since changing to NOD32 I have not been infected. It's blindingly fast and very unobtrusive.

You think Symantec is bad to remove.. Try removing the AOL software someone installed on their computer when they did the full install.. I had a buddy that didnt know much about computers. He installed everything on his HP and then had problems a year later.. That stuff was soo embedded in the hard drive it kept re-installing itself when you removed part of it and then rebooted the computer. I finally got pissed off and reformatted the whole damn thing, viola.. AOL free !

Use the XP firewall, that for AV and something like the microsoft spyware tool (also free) for spyware. All up zero cost and just as good.

Yes they do ad up to FREE, but they ALL leave behind some pests. ;)

That's the first problem... The home versions of symantecs products suck... the only symantec products worth anything are the corporate versions.... But Internet Security REALLY sucks... has caused more problems than you can imagine.

I use Trend Micro PC-Cillin Interent Security 2006 as a firewall and A/V Anti Malware program as a first line of software protection:

I recommend XBlock's X-cleaner for a secondary Anti-Malware and session cleaner. For the cost, it's amazing:

Two freeware programs make up the tertiary line, Spybot S&D:

and Adaware SE:

Adaware catches a few MRU's that the others don't find, and Spybot seems as comprehensive as X-Cleaner, and also gets a few MRU's that the other's don't find. It also features a great set of tools for Malware protection.

Of course for those using Windows XP, the Windows Update site is a must visit weekly, and common sense is also a must when using data from remote sites.

There is a reason why major corporation use Panda world wide and just because it's not as "famous" in the states as Symantec or Mcaffee is actually good. They have a free trial, Platium 2006 is the entire package in one. Dare I say it's like comparing EFILive to HPT? ;) :eek:

There are a number of products, but no single one can do it all. It is a good idea to "get a second opinion" when dealing with malware. :)

BTW for my use, only the PC-Cillin A/V-Firewall is loaded in memory, the others are selected and used as needed. (I have 83% system resources free as I type...)

I have been using Panda Platinum for a while now and must agree that it is better than the many other products I have tried. None are perfect, but Panda is one of the better ones, and it is so much faster and less obtrusive than most.

Im an IT Architect so get all my stuff for free anyway, but given the bill there is no way Id pay for the commercial stuff. Id use open source and free for home use stuff all the time.
