Hi everyone, I have a 2020 RAM 3500 but I'm installing a new 2023 engine and I have the new blank ecm still unprogrammed bought by my VIN for 2020. My doubt is that after I finish assembling everything,

1- I have a programmer that is going to program my truck from the factory with my VIN and then I want to do the delete with Efilive, but my previous engine had a cp4.2 pump and this new one already has the cp3.3 pump. Can you help me what would be the best option for me please?

2-Or should I give the programmer some instruction for some update so that the truck works correctly with the cp3.3 now?

3- And then I can do the delete with Efilive without problems?
Thanks to everyone. I appreciate your suggestions.

Dunno why you bought a new ecm for your 2020, unless it was completely toast and bricked beyond recovery but if you’ve read through previous threads on the forum you’d find that yes parameters need to be changed for the different injection pump or just use a 2021 calibration and good luck on the emissions delete. Just sounds like your diving into things with zero clue.

Thanks for replying Jim. I bought this truck at an auction a few years ago and had it sitting around until I decided to revive it since it was a big project, and among the things that were destroyed were the Engine, Transmission, etc, and the ECM was completely destroyed. So I got that 2023 Engine, the transmission, and a completely blank ECM but purchased for my VIN, as I said before. Excuse the ignorance, the programmer supposedly told me that when everything was ready and connected he would program the ECM with all the updates that were available at that time. I believe there is a recall for my truck about the problems with the cp4.2 pump where they change to the cp 3.3 and do the update. So if the programmer programs mine with the update that they supposedly already changed the pump, it would not work correctly? The Engine is almost identical and in fact came with the same Aisin Transmission, only mine was 400hp and the new one is 420hp. Sorry for the confusion of words. I just want to find the best option for me, since I delayed starting this project because I knew it was a lot of money that I was going to spend on all this and I want the truck to be as good as possible when it leaves the workshop.

That makes sense on getting a new ecm. Yes there is an updated 2020 calibration that contains all changes necessary for the CP3 pump from Cummins/Chrysler for the CP4 injection pump recall, however that specific calibration isn’t necessary to use, a 2021 calibration works just fine or changing parameters in the CP4 version to that of the CP3, about 40 parameters or so, most of which are not mapped out in EFILive. A 2022+ calibration clone of parameters can be used as well. There are a few different options to go with. There really isn’t much difference between the 2020 and the 2022+ calibration for that slight increase in torque, mainly just some torque limits increased slightly if I remember right. It’s pretty straightforward and if there is going to be added power through tuning I wouldn’t be worried about if it’s a 2020 calibration used or a 2021 or 2022 or 2023 calibration as the differences between them for that slight increase in torque on the 2022+ is going to be irrelevant in the end anyways. All that matters is if the original cp4 calibration gets used, the proper changes are put into the calibration for the cp3 pump. All depends on who’s providing the file and what they go with, end result will be the same regardless. Yes deletes can be done, there is nothing in the EFILive software to do it, that stopped at model year 2010 so it’s all on the person providing the file to set things himself in the file to handle no emissions equipment. The world we live in now in regards to emissions deletes, just be careful of what is shared/mentioned, etc in a public forum about it. Certain people live within a jurisdiction that carries hefty penalties for it.

Thank you very much Jim for the details and for those tips at the end. Maybe it seems like a bit of a stupid question because I've only really worked with software and parameters for Heavy Trucks. But can these parameters that you say be changed or checked if they are correct after programming with Jscan, Alfaobd, the Kaodtech Security Gateway Bypass and the Vlinker MC+? Because I bought it for some changes that I was going to make before changing the transmission and a couple of other things but I never used it. If it can be done with that, is it possible that you can share with me the parameters that I should check please? Thanks

No, none of those can be used to change the necessary parameters in the engine calibration for emissions or the injector pump.

And what software and interface do I need please?

User defined parameters for EFILive or hex editing a .bin version of the calibration being used. Specifics of emissions I won’t give out though.

No, no emissions. Don't worry, I was asking you about the parameters I need to check or change after the pump change, and how I can see them and change them if necessary.

Why not just eliminate the need from the start by using a 2021 calibration? Pretty certain one is on the forums here. If sticking with a calibration that doesn’t already have those changes from Cummins/Chrysler, well, can’t say where all those parameters for the injection pump are without knowing exactly which calibration and revision is being used.

Remember that the ECM is blank right now, I think they will program it in the next few days because they made a lot of progress today, they are already installing the entire interior, and the engine and transmission are installed, there are still a few details missing, fuse box, some harnesses, etc. I will be with the programmer when he does it. Or do you want me to tell you the exact details of the calibration, ecm code etc, when he finishes?

Just tell him to program it with a 2021 pickup aisin calibration. Don’t know what he’s using to do it but he should be able to program whatever calibration he wants to it

I think he uses Witech. I'm going to tell you about the 2021 calibration with my Transmission. Because in 2021 the pump is already updated, right?

Normally in Cummins Heavy Trucks I can change parameters that I need with Calterm directly connected to the truck or some with Insite and you know that with Calterm I can get the calibration of the ECM and make the modifications that I need, but I know that with this it does not work like that, I have never really connected to any, In these how can I get the calibration after it is programmed? Can I change any parameter directly connected to the truck?

You can change them like that, will not stick though. ECM powers down those changes are lost.

And yes the 2021 calibrations is when they went back to the CP3

Perfect, I'll do that, I called him now and he said yes, he uses the Witech and he may be able to put the 2021 calibration on it. After that, and I verified that it starts and everything is fine, I want to do the other thing that you know. Thanks a lot for the help and advice Jim. How can I read the calibration of this ECM? I would like to read it and save it in case I want to make any modifications in the future.

You can use Calterm to read it, don’t think it’ll give you a readout the alter and flash back in though and if you don’t have the config files needed, won’t make a difference anyways as it won’t open the readout. You can read it with hp tuners and use that but at higher risk of bricking the ecm just from reading it alone and tune with hp tuners or there are EFILive tune files on the forum to use to tune.

Okay. Thanks Jim. So the best option would be to look for a Tune File for Efilive 2021 with my Aisin transmission and Manual Transfer Case? Is there a number or something specific I need to look for the Tune File After they program it for me, stock ?
