Hi, I am in need of changing the GM e92a ecu to match the chassis (BMW) and I am getting an error:

Error code: ERR_RESPONSE/5
Response $31: "Request Out of Range".

I googled and found one post that had a express van or something, same error and forum mod said to update the program and firmware, mine way out of date.. gave me some hope so I updated both versions 7.5 and 8.0 along with firmware successfully to January 2025.

I reconnected to the engine swapped vehicle, same error code.
I tried to see if the VIN number can be changed, so I copied the original VIN to the new VIN , and it wrote it, said to turn the vehicle off for 15 seconds, no error. Ive done this same process, but in an LS1 pcm and a BMW BMW number (1999 or 1998 LS1 into a 1999 BMW 5 series)
This is a 2019 tahoe drivetrain in a 2006 BMW x5
Thanks and look forward to a successful VIN change update :)

update:
I found a post that shows V8 can update the VIN aswell. So I tried again but used v8, same error. Then I clicked clear DTC box, which I didn't want to do because all obd2 monitors were ready, and this time it changed VIN successfully. I read out VIN in both v7.5 and v8 and it shows the upated #.
Hopefully this helps someone

update with question:
can the V2 hand held unit be programmed to do this feature without the need to use a lap too? like to program it back to GM VIN# and vice versa if needed.
Thanks again :)

Thanks for updating.

Were there any DTC's present (when you clicked the Clear DTC box)...?

Is your PCM a 1998 or 1999...?

( what color are its connectors, what does part/service number on it say ...? )

I take it it comes from an F-car...

the pcm that I was trying to change is from a 2019 Tahoe, e92a ecu, grey blue and black connectors. There were several pending DTC from initial engine swap, no check engine light.

the only other time I needed to change VIN was on the 1998 or 1999 LS1 0411 pcm that I had motor swapped into a 1999 BMW 528

I have a question about the vin change operation
I changed the vin successfully to match the chassis of the swapped vehicle, I can read the vin with efilive, I can read the vin with a generic scan tool, but when it went for state inspection it failed at the very end with error OBD2 Vin, and all the prinout shows all monitors are n/a. All monitors are ready and show ready in the hand held scan tool before and after inspection.

I don't think I selected update check digit, is that necessary if the entered vin number is 100% correct?

What does "obtain secure access before changing vin" do differently than regular vin change? It requires a Key aswell.
thanks
