View Full Version : Scan runs "slow"

The last couple of times I have tried to log data the scanner seems to run slow or is inaccurate - I am running V7.3.2 on Windows XP SP2. It was working fine before, amd I haven't changed anything that I know of other than the usual windows updates. The problem started with doing this after about 10 minutes of logging, now it just runs slow all the time - so if I tap the gas, the RPMs don't move, then a few seconds later they rise slowly.

Any ideas?

How many channels do you have selected?

23 selected. I thought 24 was the number to stay below?

Channels or PIDS? 24 channels is the key to being able to log at 10fps. Also check in the Properties, under the Logging tab and check that "Stream-Fast"

Yes PIDs, where do I find channel info?

On the status bar of the Scan Tool you will see info like Selected PIDS... You should also see Selected Channels, and there is a Channel column that show how many channels each PID requires.

OK, it says 22 PIDS, 24 of 96 channels

Did you check the Scan Mode in the Properties like suggested above as well?

Also, if you go to the F9 (Data) tab what is the priority of the selected PIDS in the very first column. All mine are priority 1.

Yes, scan is et to fast and priority is one for all PIDs

Hmmm.... Well you should get 10fs then. You don't happen to have the Bi Directional control panel open as well do you as that will drop the frame rate?

No, running the scan only.

I appreciate the help. Any other ideas, thoughts????

I'll try it again today and see what I can find.

Further info, it scans fine but when it starts logging it runs behind worse and worse as the log progresses?

Just went back over this thread and noticed that the laptop spec is not listed.

I have a 2Ghz dual core with 2GB RAM and obviously have no problems.

IBM 600
Intel pentium II
298Mhz
128 Ram
80 gig drive
Windows XP

It was working fine up until a few months ago

I think I know why the log runs slow. I recently added all the spark PID's starting 'EST-'.

This took the total from 29 to 44. On the F9 tab, at the bottom left, scan mode is Dynamic for the 29 PID's & General for the 44 PID's.

If the PID's go above 29 with my config, the scan mode changes from Dynamic to General. Under 'Edit/Properties/Logging/Scan Mode', the option Stream Fast is selected. The info box here probably explains in full the relevance of channels etc., but it's been a long day & I'm knackered.

Sliding the bar towards 'Faster' under 'Edit/Properties/Playback' does speed up the playback.

What is odd is that I only noticed the slow logging today, when the same PID selection was used yesterday for both monitoring & log recording.

Oh well!

Yes pids should be kept low for max fps.
It will scan them with more, but it can miss data and as seen go slow.
I learnt that early on. Didnt think about that one.
When logging spark pids, you wont be able to log much else. In fact you may even need to not log all the spark pids to fit them in.

Just to the right of the number of PID's is a number of channels. For the fast datalogging, you want to keep the number of channels at 24 or less.

Under scan mode is at general, I can change to dynamic but not stream fast?

Not sure I understand your question...

Appendix-E in the Scan Tool manual discusses Scan Modes, Speeds, Channels and their relationships in the EFILive software.
