I got into this want to do 2 simple things....I thought. I wanted to set the timing up 2 degrees and lean out the fuel a couple of notches (the old days i would have changed jet by 2 sizes). Now I have a 2001 Chevy HD 2500 with 8.1/Allison 4wd regular cab.

I have played with a few settings I can't get the scan tool to read anything except the PIDS and messages, but getting familiar with the Tun application.
I watch the car buff shows on cable and they always discuss setting the timing for "Premium fuel" also i have a black tailpipe and want to lean it out so I can get a clean pipe.

Can someone help me with the basics? Maybe point me to a page in a manual that describes this. I am reading the docs but not through all of them yet.

Thanks in advance.

There a several ways to do this:

just manipulate the IFR and/or MAF tables till you get the AFR you want...

but, how do you know what your actual AFR is...?

you would need a wideband to know that...

but, if you have a wideband, why not do the AutoVE procedure...?

once the AVE procedure is done, you'll find that your actual AFR follows your commanded AFR...
so now you can set your OLFA and PE tables to what you like, and the wideband will confirm your settings (i.e. now it has gotten simple);

(and you can now recalibrate your MAF table if you think you want to run with the MAF);

that's how I got my tips to stay mostly clean;

for spark timing, see the hi and lo octane tables.
