Joel: You wouldn't happen to have this info on the 4L80e would you? BTW, you file above helped me out tremendously today. Was doing a shift kit and had all the valve body bolts in a handy dandy bolt sorting box (has holes arranged the same as the valve body so I don't have to remember where the bolts go) but as can be expected, turned it over and dumped them all out. Since there are seven different sizes (lengths and head sizes combined) I was at a standstill until I remembered your post. Thanks for the help!
:cheers:

Hello all, newbie here. I read a few posts & you seem like a great group... so I joined.

QUESTION 1: I have a 1997 Express/4.3/4L60E shallow-pan while the 2000 Astro/4.3/4L60E Deep-Pan. Will the Express trans work in the Astro without major mods? Both trans are One-Piece housings.
Tomorrow I'll have to measure the total length, (it's to dark & cold now).

QUESTION 2: To rebuild the Astro Deep-Pan, is there any quirks I need to look out for verses a normal automatic? My last rebuild was a (late 1970's) Turbomatic 350.

HISTORY:
This Astro (mileage 200K) trans shifts fine in 1-2 but has no 3-4 gear so I'm assuming the clutches R-Gone. Fluid is only "ever-so-slighty" burnt & clear-brown. I haven't dropped the pan yet for inspection, (just got the car today).

Direct answer would be REALY GREAT, my free time is very short.

THANKS!!! fm

Hi fm-usa,

Welcome to the forum...:cheers:

I couldn't answer your questions with certainty...

but here's the transmission wire diagrams for the two vans, the wires/pins appear to be the same, so my guess is they are interchangeable.

Yes, 4L60E suffering no 3rd or 4th typically is 3/4 clutch failure.

With the deep pan you have to get the correct filter.

(if others have more info please respond)

BY-THE-WAY... is there a GOOD website dedicated to just Astrovans? So far all I found is body-rebuilders.

That's SUPER joecar, it's a start.

It's 8AM and was just about to don my wetsuit to swim under my cars (lots of rain here).

When times were good I had my '97 Express Pro-rebuilt, todays :bad: economics is just killing me.

THANKS!!!

Good info!

Here's a little more that might or might not help some others with problems: Circuit 1020 in S-Series (Blazer, Jimmy, Bravada, S-10, Sonoma) controls tranny functions, and is subject to failure because of a switch in the steering column connector harness. Many transmissions have been rebuilt because of this failed $80 switch.

Failure of this circuit can make the tranny default to limp mode, 3rd gear only, and can trip the tranny fluid pressure controller to max, which will make the tranny detonate in a week if not fixed, or at least re-set in the computer for temporary fix.

2001 5.3 (LM7) from a 2wd silverado including all accessories and PCM
2002 4l60E from a 2wd silverado converting the valve body to full manual.
2000 GMC jimmy 4door is the vehicle

I am looking for additional documentation for 4L60E tranny. All the links I found are dead - websites are closed.
I would be thrilled if someone could email me the documention or tell me how I could get it from them.
Thanks in advance.

I do have the free dropbox service. If you don't have that I can set you up with it. Every time I do, I get an
additional free 250megabytes of storage up to 8 gigabytes.

I did make a teflon ring sizer for the input shaft teflon rings from a 1 inch PVC coupler. I also used a soft plastic
sleeve and a strip of paper and a 1 1/8 inch box wrench to resize the rings after they were installed. I used
the same plastic sleeve to enlarge them enough to get them to slide over the input shaft bu putting the sleeve
in the rings then forcing a couple of sockets through the sleeve and ring. I used 19mm, 20mm and 21mm sockets.
The inside diameter had to be enlarged to 1.085 inches if I remember. My resizing tool compressed them back
down to 1.095 inches. Somewhere else I saw that someone used a mylar sheet of plastic to slip the rings over the
input shaft. That might have worked better than what I did. I used a couple of large hose clamps joined together
to align the two halves of the front pump. I checked everything on the torque converter to make sure all fit nicely.

[ copied from Mike's post in the 4L80E Reference Materials thread ]

If you're thinking of driving a 4L80E transmission from a 4L60E segment, consider this:
- the sense of the 2-3 shift solenoid signal has to be inverted;
- the TCC PWM signal cannot be driven from the TCC PWM signal (read the 4L60E TCC description in post #5 above).

See post #11 here: 4L80E-Reference-Material (http://forum.efilive.com/showthread.php?4305-4L80E-Reference-Material&p=38965#post38965)

PT shift table relationships:

basic relationships:
1->2 curve should be above 2->1 curve;
2->3 curve should be above 3->2 curve;
3->4 curve should be above 4->3 curve;

additional relationships:
3->2 curve should be above 1->2 curve;
4->3 curve should be above 2->3 curve;

this can be summarized as: the curves cannot cross anywhere;

if they cross anywhere, then you will not be able to predict what gear the PCM selects when the operating point hits the cross.

any idea if the above links are now perhaps accessible somewhere else?

No, only in cruise in 3rd or 4th, and never during WOT/PE or high load, and not in 2nd (2nd transitions to 3rd rather quickly).

The link from post #33 above is broken, the destination file of that link does not exist anymore (error 404 file/directory not found).
