View Full Version : Engine won't run longer than 1 sec

2006 LBZ

When I start the engine it fires up fine and to the correct RPM (~800) but after one second of normal sounding running it cuts off. It does this consistently every time I try to start the engine. I have given it throttle and this did not help. I have primed the fuel until the pump is stiff.

Has anyone encountered this problem? I have ruled out the Anti-theft system because I disabled that with EFI Live.

Did you disable the anti-theft because of this problem? Is the engine in the stock vehicle?

I disabled the VATS and reflashed the ECU. Still behaved in the same way.

Maybe you should reflash the anti-theft back to stock and run a diagnostic on it to see the root cause. It might be an easy fix.

With VATS in effect it won't even start for 1 second. In addition it would display a P1631 code.

Have you scanned for codes?

I think the tune needs some tweaking for your particular installation. I would start by making sure you are using a calibration for a manual trans.

If you would like to E-mail me the calibration, I'll take a look.

I have scanned for codes and didn't see anything pertaining to Disable fuel or anti-theft. I also watched the VATS PIDs while cranking and running for the 1 second and none of the VATS PIDs changed state.

It behaved this way with the stock ECU, with the ECU reflashed to disable VATS, reflashing the stock ECU back on.

I will post the current DTCs shortly and the state of the VATS.

Hopefully the new EFILive release will give us more control over the LBZ/LMM DTCs.

Best to start with a manual trans calibration.

In looking over what I currently have, I don't see a way to convert to a manual trans calibration.

I think the reason for the Fuel Pump Relay circuit DTC is the lack of the engine being installed in a vehicle and the fuel being supplied by an independent system. The engine is installed in a test cell and coupled to an engine dynamometer.

I noticed code P2510 was also set. Do you have the ignition relay installed as per the factory diagram?

I believe I have the ignition wires properly connected. I just got the BCM from the donor vehicle and need to figure out what wires need to be connected. I am hoping the lack of the BCM is the culprit. If you know what wires need to be connected, please advise.

One more thing, check the fuel flow and pulse while cranking and as it dies. If you had fuel and lost it as the engine dies, that could be an indication of the theft fuel disable. What kind of harness are you using on this project? If you can borrow the BCM out of the donor vehicle and do a simulated ignition PassLock signal, then the engine will start. Changing the VATS timer and attempt parameters will drastically reduce the time it takes to learn this simulated PassLock signal.

Is this is a real LBZ truck or a conversion?
Also, the first release of the LBZ calibration files did not disable VATS correctly, it was corrected in a subsequent update, I'm wondering if you have those calibrations.
Your .cal files need to be v7.03 or higher and dated 21st / Jan or later.

Ross

I am using the calibration file v7.03 dated Jan 13 2007. Is there one newer?

The engine is installed in a test cell. I am using the engine harness from the vehicle. Yesterday I received the BCM from the same vehicle in which the engine and ECU were pulled. I'm trying to decide what wires need to be connected.

I plan on connecting the Serial 2 cable from the BCM to the ECU Serial 2. Supplying 12 volts to Ignition 1 & Ignition 0

Do I need to feed any voltage to the "key in ignition switch signal" ?

When the engine first cranks it makes proper fuel rail pressure and pilot/main fueling seem reasonable. Then after about a second they switch to zero fuel and fuel rail pressue goes back down.

Once I get all the wiring straighented out and can successfully start and run the engine I will post a wiring diagram of how to run an engine outside of the vehicle.

Al,

Can you provide a few more details about the simulated ignition signal. If I have VATS truly disabled, would this still be necessary?

What would I need to do to fake out the signal?

If the PassLock system is truly disabled then no you don't need to "trick" it.
I found several diagrams online and some gadgets that learn and set it up for you. I would need take a closer look into the BCM schematics before recommending a relay resistor setup.

I guess one question that remains is,

Anyone successfully use EFILive to disable the BCM or Passlock on a LBZ?

Running an engine in a test cell works best with minimal wiring. So if there is a way to avoid the BCM and other unnecessary wiring then that is what I would prefer to strive towards. It would be great if you could order a dyno engine harness and ECU.

Anyone successfully use EFILive to disable the BCM or Passlock on a LBZ?

yes, there has been several installed into boats.

What version of EFI Live, version & date of cal files, and Flash Scan firmware are required to fully defeat VATS on a LBZ?

I have 7.3.3 (Build 475)
I am using the Cal files updated on Jan 13th and my flash scan firmware is 2.04.53

They were too old I think, I've sent your modified file back to Andrew at support with the VATS turned off.

What cal files should I be using? Is there a place on the EFI Live website that indicates what is the most current cal file?

thetallengineer

I reflashed the ECM this morning with the file you sent and it is still doing the same thing. Does my software need to be the same as yours in order for it to reflash the ECM properly? I have been trying to start it without the BCM attached. My understanding is that is fine if the VATS is truly disabled.

I watched the replay of the Data page as I tried starting the engine. VTD-VTD3 - Fuel Disabled very quickly jumps to Yes then back to No during starting.

If anyone can tell me what exact software, patches, and firmware they are using to defeat VATS that would be greatly appreciated. I appreciate everyones help so far and look forward to getting this problem solved.

I asked Andrew to forward a file on to you that we know has been used in a conversion before with no BCM, if it still won't run at that point then we can look further in to it.

Cheers,
Ross

Thanks to some help from the friendly folks at EFI live, I now have the VATS disabled.

Trippin
March 27th, 2007, 12:41 PM
Does that mean it runs for longer than one second?

thetallengineer
March 27th, 2007, 11:57 PM
Yes it now runs for as long as I want.

Trippin, Thanks for your help with initially bringing me up to speed on the software.
