My Z06 crapped out last month with a P0131 (HO2S circuit low voltage bank 1 sensor 1). There had been a couple of short instances of the engine running very rough and one day it stuck. I never got an engine check light because the condtion has to persist for 100 seconds and I had always turned it off long before then. But the dealer was able to and they swapped the O2 sensor.

It's had been ok but last night while driving home on the freeway with the cruise control on a pretty flat stretch I could tell the car wasn't maintaining speed. It did it a couple of time and once I managed to get it into neutral long enough to verify it wasn't idling very well. The symptoms seem the same so I assume the original problem hasn't been fixed.

Today I tried to pull up any pending data but get errors, e.g.: Could not be retrieved from the vehicle. Reason: No response from vehicle. Both the SMS and O2 pages report errors. (And of course the FF page says it is not supported yet.) Here are some screen grabs:

Here's output from the console: console.txt (http://www.xse.com/leres/scratch/console.txt)

I installed the V7.4.2 release when it came out and my scan tool reports version s 534/666. My OS is 12611833 and the timestamp on C:\Program Files\EFILive\V7\Calibrations\E38\12611833.cal is 7/19/2007. I told the scan tool I have an E38 controller.

I've also noticed that the throttle position sensor has a range of 21 to 88 instead of 0 to 100.

So what am I doing wrong? What other info would be helpful?

Ok, I logged data on the way home from work today and captured a big log which I cropped down to show a couple of failures. The first thing I noticed is that HO2S22 is very lazy. The other is that at about frame 2100, HO2S11 and HO2S12 both drop off to less than 0.02V for ~100 frames. Then they start switching but not really normally and then stay high for quite awhile and eventually go back to normal. I think there are a couple more examples in this log.

When HO2S1x go low, timing goes down too... DFCO or lean cruise...?

Craig, you're up late (I see you're online)...

It finally threw a code: P0171, Fuel Trim System Lean Bank 1. Sounds like the long term FT has to be 10% or more for 3 minutes.

So one obvious cause would be some kind of air leak except I'm not also seeing P0174. Is it possible I have an exahust leak that comes and goes while on a flat, level and smooth road with the cruise control on? I wonder if it's something like a bad injector but I'm not really familiar with what they do when they die.

Here's a laugh. I had my laptop with me when the check engine light came on (plus it was running really poorly) so I pulled over and was able to extract the DTC. After sitting around for a few minutes, I started it and it start running ok so I jumped on the freeway. A few miles later it crapped out so I pulled over and called OnStar and asked what they could tell me about the check engine light. She says, wait 15 seconds and I'll check. 60 seconds later she comes back and asks if I just put gas in. "No." Well, did I put gas in recently. "More than 100 miles ago?" She then announces that my gas cap is loose. I explain that while I know leaving the gas cap loose will throw a DTC, I'm doubtful it can cause the car to run this poorly and mention the car was at the dealer last month for identical symptoms.

When I got home I checked the cap; it was nice and tight.

Craig, you're up late (I see you're online)... Yep, just got home and had to post the latest!

So far, it appears the O2 sensor replaced last month probably was OK (but why didn't I have any problems until now?) Clearly bank 2, sensor 2 is bad. But there's still something wrong wtih bank 1. All I know is my new toy is grounded until the dealer takes another crack at it.

I have seen new parts fail shortly after installation.

I have seen new parts fail shortly after installation. Ok but the log I captured shows both the primary and secondary O2 sensors going low voltage/rich when the failure mode kicks in. Seems like there is a common cause and I can't really think of a way for an exhaust leak to be intermittent. That kinda leaves fuel; could a flakey injector cause these symptoms?
