Just tried to flash the new 4L80E cal's into my PCM and I get a 'cable unknown' message?
Any idea's???

Now says PCM is in an unknown state?

This is a screen shot of the attempted read???

Oh, and both the USB and the OBD LED's flash

Long shot, but is the PCM licensed to the cable already?

Yes, I've flashed this PCM quite a few times already. The truck has been out of action for around 2 months and this happened as soon as I tried to reconnect.
The cable unknown issue has been resolved...it recognizes the cable.
I still can't read, write to the PCM.
I can start the scanner and it will connect and log data...things like when I push the accel pedal, the data shows this.
So, all of the sensors are talking OK.

Your PCM is refusing to respond correctly to the "unlock PCM" command that FlashScan is sending it. FlashScan needs to unlock the GM security prior to reflashing or reading the PCM.

I don't know why the PCM is not ready, the only thing I can think of is to turn on the ignition, wait 30 seconds, then try reading the PCM.
If that fails, try ignition off and wait for 1 minute, then on and wait for 1 minute, then try reading the PCM.
That's a long shot it may not work, but its worth a try. It will only take five minutes of your time to try it out.

P.S. I emailed you directly as well.

Paul

Thanks Paul,
I'll give it a try this afternoon. I was hoping to be driving the Burb to Sydney on Thursday....doesn't look like it's going to happen.

Tried your suggestions Paul.
Also tried turning the key and the motor won't turn over at all.
Is that PCM related?

I'm pretty sure the PCM won't (can't) stop the engine from cranking.
I'm sure you've checked, but flat battery maybe (or dead starter or solenoid)?

Paul

Yeah...just to make sure, I had the battery on the charger all day.
At one stage I think I saw the message whilst trying to read 'no calibration in PCM to read' or some such.

I've just swapped in the 4L80E and made the changes at the PCM.
When I start the scanner and look at my pids it says current gear 2.
This would stop me from cranking right?
The car needs to be in park?

Well, I hooked up the brand new spare PCM and EFILive read it.
I'm really cheesed off.
I have no licences left and I was supposed to be taking a 3000k trip in 3 days time.

When both shift solenoids are OFF in the 4L80E, that corresponds to 2nd gear (i.e. the deafult); this is what you may see with engine off;

that will not prevent cranking; there is a separate P-N switch that does this based on the physical position of the gear lever.

Send me your FlashScan serial number to paul@efilive.com, I'll send you a a replacement license.

Thanks Paul.
Got the license...I'll have to wait until after work to try it. Although...I do have a rotten headache...I may go home!
Joe, are you saying then that the truck should crank whether or not the PCM is installed?
Has anyone tried removing the PCM and then turning the key?

joecar

Yes, it will crank but not start.

That's very unusual then.
I haven't altered anything in that area of wiring.
I changed the pins at the PCM for the 4L80E and I added the extra speed sensor to the PCM.
I rewired my injectors as I have installed the marine manifold.
I added wiring for the twin elec fans (also 2 pins in the PCM).
I'm a sparky by trade and deal mostly with control/PLC wiring so I'm not just a home hack...I have some idea of correct/safe wiring procedures.
When I turn my key...nothing!
Guess I'll have to go for a crawl under the truck...again.
Thanks for all of the help you guys have given me...this is why EFILive ROCKS!!!!

The BCM may prevent cranking (it controls a relay which is in series with the PN switch).

Oh, BTW the PN switch is located at the gear lever attachment inside the console.

98 K1500... let me look up the wire diagrams...

Oh...

- your PN switch should be on the LHS of your 4L60E, so you have to check if your 4L80E has one, if not you have to put one on;

- looks like the PN switch (in series with ignition switch) triggers the starter relay which then powers the starter solenoid... BCM is not involved.

Hmmm...from what everyone else has said and those who've done the 60-80 swap...this has never been mentioned so I'd assume it's fine.

EDIT: But I will check it out.
Do you have a copy of the drawings you'd be willing to send me Joe?

Thanks

I asked a mate of mine at GM who says he's pretty sure it won't crank without the PCM (not 100% sure though). He's sure the E38's won't crank without the PCM.

I can email you the starting circuit wiring diagram if you need Howard. As far as I can tell, it does not involve the pcm though... It does however involve the trans range switch on the side of the trans. There is some room for adjustment there, it may not be in park/neutral even though the gearshift is.

Latest issue...I can bench program the PCM (made a lead today) but s soon as I install it in the truck...back to the original fault.

Well guys..after two days of tearing my hair out...(actually...lucky I have none) and a ripping migraine (stess related and lack of sleep I'm sure) and pulling my wiring apart atleast 6 times.
You're not going to believe this.
I found a 'kill switch' that the previous owner had installed.
Goes to a pressure switch under the carpet!
I found the bypass by accident. Laying under the dash...I must have pushed it whilst I was installing the Hydroboost unit!
Pushed it, turned the key...truck idles!
Hooked upto the PCM and read it!
Damn!
Thanks everyone for the help.
I have a few issues to resolve and need to do alot of testing.

Yeah....turns out that was the problem all along.
We all know what to 'ASSuME' means. Lol!
As it was I found a piece of 'something' inside the 4L60E so it either let go at the same time or was getting ready to.
I hope to rebuild the 10 bolter whilst looking for a 14.

Howard, do you have a pic of the 'something' you found inside the 4L60LE...?
