The splash screen is the logo that appears when you first power up the V2.

Thanks man.

Here are some more.

I wonder if there is a way to make the splash screen stay up longer, or even come up if idle... like a screensaver? When I turn my V2 on, I see the screen for a half a second now. I would swear it was longer before.

Yes it is faster than the old V2.4 firmware, the boot sequence has been heavily optimized. You can view the splash screen using one of the options inside "self tests".

You can change the splash screen time by editing the Settings.dat file using a hex editor. (It will be a user definable option in future).

If you understand C stuctures, here's the layout of the Settings.dat file:

typedef struct {
TCFG_LOCALE locale; // Locality, used for date formats
TCFG_UNITS units; // Units, used for default or alternate units
WORD arDelay1; // Auto-repeat, inital delay in ms
WORD arDelay2; // Auto-repeat, time between repeats in ms
WORD splashTime; // Number of ms to display the EFILive AutoCal splash screen
long date; // MRU Date
long time; // MRU Time
WORD fileCounter; // Filename counter
WORD lowPwrTime; // Number of minutes before sleeping
WORD alertTime; // Time to display alerts
WORD errorTime; // Time to display errors
WORD fileSystem; // Filesystem in use: 0=None, 1=Internal Flash, 2=SD Card
BYTE unused[256-28]; // Pad to 256 bytes
} TCFG;
See image for more info.

out of curiosity, is it possible to down load a virus to the V2?

Technically yes. But practically, its not even remotely possible (I'm not throwing out a challenge by the way).

Depending on your definition of a virus, anything other than the official EFILive FlashScan firmware could be classed as a virus (sometimes even our beta firmware behaves as badly as a virus :bash:).

There are safeguards built into FlashScan that prevent unauthorized code from executing in FlashScan.

1. The flash memory is locked with a 64 bit key. Assuming someone could try 1000 keys per second, it would take about 250 billion years to try just half the possible combinations. And that's not taking into account that aftger each unsuccessful attempt, the CPU must be cold booted.

2. If the key was cracked (and it is different on each FlashScan device), the firmware must adhere to a number of constraints, including magic 32-bit numbers embedded in random parts of the code and multiple 16 bit CRC values.

3. The virus writer would need to have knowledge of the inner workings of the FlashScan RTOS. None of that is available outside of EFILive.

So there really is no practical way a virus or any other non-official EFILive code (or code damaged by faulty hardware) could execute on the FlashScan device.

Anytime FlashScan detects the firmware has been modified/damaged in any way, it will go into deadpoll mode and flash the two orange LEDs (assuming it is not too brain-dead to do even that simple task). So you will know if anything has been modified/damaged.

By the way, those safeguards were not put in place to protect against viruses but were put in place to detect a failure of the flash memory and to prevent FlashScan from operating if any single bit in the flash memory was altered or damaged.

Paul

Use the program Start->All Programs->EFILive->V8.1->EFILive Explorer.exe and on the [Splash] tab page, you can load any 128x64 pixel bitmap to use as your splash screen on FlashScan.

Some sample splash screens are available in \Program Files\EFILive\V8.1\Splash Screens

v8.1???

7.5 here on the V2

You can (and should) install V8.1 even though you already have V7.5 installed. Right now, V8.1 does not replace anything in V7.5, it just adds extra functionality. You should also upgrade your FlashScan V2 boot block and firmware to V2.5.xx.

V8.1 (and the new V2 firmware) adds standalone black box logging functionality to your V2. As well as allowing you to change the initial splash screen.

After installing V8.1, and before upgrading the boot block and firmware on your V2, make sure you read the document Start->All Programs->EFILive->V8.1->Documents->Upgrading FlashScan. It contains important instructions on how to upgrade your V2 correctly.

The latest V7.5.4 and V8.1.1 installation packages are available here:
http://www.efilive.com/download.aspx

how to intall the picture on the device?

ChipsByAl
October 27th, 2008, 05:15 AM
First you need to create the image and place it in the "Spash Screens" sub folder of the V8 folder. Yours should be similar to this:
C:\Program Files\EFILive\V8\Splash Screens
I just took one the the defaults and modified to suit me then changed the name. Then using the EFI Live Explorer program you can navigate to the Splash Screen folder and install it to your V2.

I tried but it didn't happen it gives $005 and the following(through tracing the error):

Copy ".\splash.ebm" to "\EFILive\V7\Config\"
Set FlashScan File System to "Config"
File date time is: "20081027 22:47:02"
Opened Windows File: ".\splash.ebm"
File size is: 1024 bytes
Failed to created destination file "\EFILive\V7\Config\splash.ebm". Error: Error: $0005
Closed Windows file

Blacky
October 27th, 2008, 08:04 AM
Failed to created destination file "\EFILive\V7\Config\splash.ebm". Error: Error: $0005

Error numbers can be looked up here:
\Program Files\EFILive\V8\Documents\EFILiveV8_Errors.txt
(Eventually, the error text will be displayed not just the numbers)

However, error $0005 is listed as: $0005 USB insufficient resources which is not what I would expect.

It is far more likely to be $0185 F_ERR_NOTFOUND, (File system error: 5). The "not found" part refers to the folder:\EFILive\V7\Config which is created when you format the Config file system.

There was a bug in an earlier firmware version that did not add the $0180 to the file system errors and so the file system errors all got reported incorrectly.

Make sure you have formatted the Config file system using EFILive Explorer before attempting to copy a splash image file to FlashScan.

Also, please make sure you are using the latest boot block (V2.06.02) and firmware (V2.06.04 or above). You can get the latest firmwware as part of the V8.1.2 download/installation from our downloads web page.

You will have to recopy/restore those files.

Blacky
October 27th, 2008, 02:21 PM
If EFILive Explorer can read the list of files in the [Config] tab page, then you don't need to reformat it. It is ok and the $0005 error must be something else.

If you have the V2.06.xx firmware then the error number should be accurate. However, I do not know why you would get a $0005 USB insufficient resources error when trying to copy the *.ebm file to FlashScan. If you click properties on the [Config] tab page in Explorer, how mush free space do you have?

Paul

Blacky

how to restore them?

The files in the [Config] tab page in EFILive Explorer can all be re-copied from the PC to FlashScan at any time.

To completely reset the [Config] file system follow these instructions:

Plug FlashScan into the PC.
Start EFILive Explorer.
Select the [Config] tab page.
If you have made modifications to Options.txt file, then drag it from the bottom pane to the top pane. That will save a copy of the modified version to your PC.
If you have not made any modifications to the Options.txt file then don't worry about saving it.
Click on the [Format] button to format the Config file system.
Highlight all the*.pmm files and the Options.txt file in the top pane and drag them down to the (now empty) pane at the bottom.

no, I am afried of the format??

If EFILive_Explorer can't read the Config file system then you MUST format it (it only takes about 15 seconds). There is nothing stored in the Config file system that cannot be easily copied back in, in around 1-2 minutes. In fact, after you format it you MUST copy all the *.pmm files and Options.ini file to FlashScan. That's the way its designed to work.

I presume you have not made any modifications to Options.txt. If you have see my previous post about saving it first.
