View Full Version : Where to start with cam change?

I changed over cams and was wanting to know where to start with tuning the new one. I figured it would be fairly simple since the 2 cams are close but guess I was mistaken. The old cam was a lazy lobe TSP cam 231/237 .598 .595 112lsa, new cam is a Lunati Voodoo 232/238 .599 .601 113lsa. The Lunati is a fast ramp rate cam and starting the car with the old cam tune A/F is extremely lean. Small drive shows it to be very lean through 3000rpm. Didn't go much further than 3k since it was so lean. 18 - 20 to 1 lean.

Would it be best to start all over going back to a stock tune and starting VE all over again or can I get it straight with this tune? I put the MAF and front O2's back online just to drive it to work.

You can probably start with the tune you have. When going thru the AutoVE process, I would start by adding 5-7% accross the board, then start up and monitor idle for a safe AFR. If it still looks lean, I would step up the VE table to the 10, 13, 15% incrementally until I found a safe AFR to start tuning. Just keep a close eye on your logs so you don't burn up your engine.

Thanks TA. I'll try that route. Makes sense and a whole lot easier.

I had to add 50% to 400, 800 rpm rows and 40% to the 1200 rpm row to get back tp the 14's, AFR.

Added 30% to the rest of the VE table to sit in the 14's during a normal drive. Rich side of 14's but safe side. Wide open throttle run put in the mid 11 AFR range but still safe. I think I can start Auto VE safely now and get back to normal with minimal logging.

Odd that the fast ramp rate cam is taking such drastic changes. My preload was way too much on the old cam at .150, the new pushrods have my preload around .040 - .050 now. I wander if that has alot to do with the big changes needed?

That does seem like a lot. You might double check for leaks just as a precaution.

I'll check for leaks. I'm also going to recal the wideband, double check all the wiring and maybe re-enable trims to see what the narrowbands are seeing. The car feels great though.

I'll keep you posted.
