Can anyone explain to me what each shift pattern refers to?
There is Normal shift, Pattern A, B, TAP UP, TAP DOWN, Hot shift etc.
Im guessing Normal Shift = Drive
Pattern A = Drive + Sports Button
Pattern B = Dunno
Tap UP,DOWN = Manual
Hot Shift = when trans overheats obviously.
Any info would be much appreciated.

This is close, based on scanned A6 parameters, but not with Holden control modes:
Normal = Normal
Pattern A = Driver Shift Control (TUTD) available
Tap Up/Tap Down = Tap Up/Tap Down Active
DSC available may or may not implement a change in shift pattern (depends on the cal), but when the TUTD control is used (tapped), it will switch into TUTD mode.
Hot Shift - the trans attempts to cool itself down with a shift/mode strategy that is "proven" to create less heat.
Hope this helps.
Cheers and Merry Xmas.

ah yes, makes a bit more sense now.
so basically switching to manual mode, but not actually tapping the gears = pattern a or b.
Normal Shift = Drive
Pattern A = Drive + Sports Button
Pattern B = Drive + Tapup,Tapdown available
Tap UP,DOWN = Manual
Hot Shift = when trans overheats obviously.

Probably. Hard to tell exactly unless the various status states are logged/monitored. It varies by the TCM calibration options that have been set.

Another note on the A6 and the physical selector positions which may add some context.
P, R, N and D are as per most regular trans'. If the selector is in D, and there is no power on the trans, or a fault, or it has an unprogrammed controller, it may just drive around in 3rd gear and not change.
The 6L80/90 has 3 more "D" positions. Call them D2, 3, 4.
These positions are programmable in function and vary by calibration.
Some cals do nothing into D2 etc, some like the Corvette shift to DSC ready in D2, some change to a "sports" shift pattern with higher shift points, some like the Holden/G8 drop the trans straight into first gear at D2 etc.....beware.....1st gear at 60mph would be a surprise, so fortunate that GM physically blocks the selector from other positions.
Happy New Year to all!
