Question What does LS1 stand for?

My 13 year old nephew stumped me on this question...
    What does LS1 stand for?
It's probably something simple, but I couldn't think of anything...Even when I googled it, came up blank...
    Anyone?

LS1 is the RPO or Regular Production Option code given to the Gen3 engines by GM.

So it doesn't stand for Lotus1? Or something else? It's the RPO....

    Hello Gameover,

As stated above LS1 refers to the RPO. The term LS1 is often used to describe all Gen III / IV engines. The term LSx is starting to be used more to describe these familes of engines.

Technically, the LS1 is a 5.7 L Gen III V8. The LS6 is a variant of this engine, with improved cylinder heads and higher compression. Most of us also recognize the LQ4 as a 6.0 L Gen III V8 engine. Similar to above, the LQ9 is an LQ4 variant with LS6 style heads (larger combustion chamber) and higher compression.

Every Gen III V8 engine has it's own "L" number. The Gen IV use a different RPO identification system.

    Regards,
    Taz

    Engine RPO codes start with L (e.g. LS1, LQ9, LT1).
    Trans RPO codes start with M (e.g. M30, M32, MD8).

They are codes, as said above.

See attached which is an accumulation of RPO codes, I pulled it from the web.
