Looks like it's coming around full cycle... in the mid-late 70's (highschool for me) I remember the rate being 1.00AUD = 1.20USD.

Joe, the financial types do say this might happen again. I can see USPost hiring a 747 each day to send cheap stuff purchased in the US to Australia.
The vehicle import laws in Victoria recently changed to make it a lot harder to import modified cars, pretty much ruling out any hope of me picking up a 67/68 Camaro with a nice 572 in it whilst at PRI. Might have to be on the look out for an original 60's Cadillac instead so I can bring it over and shove a Duramax in once it's here.

Tell me about it. It doesn't seem that long ago that the NZ$ was up in the AU$0.90 cent range. Now it's tanked!

That sux... can you import the car in stock form, and then import the 572 to drop into it...?

What year has the Vic gov't set as the no-mods year...?

    Anti-hotrodding laws really suck.

I don't know the exact details on the new law, but 'any' year car is subject to it. Something along the lines of if the car was modified from factory spec in the last 20 years then you have to prove the modifications are legal BEFORE it can enter the country. Essentially this is their way of stopping 95% of the classic car market brining cars in. It was one of those legislations that got passed without a word of it coming, needless to say all motoring groups are working hard to reverse it.
These rules are made by people who obviously have no idea about the hot rodding world, they would be happier to let in a stock 67 Camaro with a clapped out 350 and drum brakes, than a 67 Camaro with an LS1 and modern 4 wheel discs. The other insanity of it all is the car still has to meet local registration laws before it can be driven here anyway.

It's probably comes more from trying to stop the flood of highly modified Japanese imports we get, if that is the case then they should have made a cut off year exemption.
It's sad to admit but if you are in to high performance cars then Victoria is not the place you want to live.
