Ooooorah! I'm gettin better at this stuff. Found the culprit. It was marked as a valid PID but the software got into a hissy fit with it selected. No sweat.

Injector Pulse Width Injector 1 INJ1PW

I had that selected and it gave me error 31 when I tried to go to "record". I managed to get the old laptop to run another time (Getting real hard to do that) and simply compared PID to PID what was on the old VS the new and found that 1 difference.

The 8 injector pulse width PIDs are for Diesels.
For petrol engines use: {GM.IBPW1} and {GM.IBPW2}.

Have you run the PID validation (Shift+F2) after connecting to your 98? Those 8 injector pulse width PIDs should not be marked valid.

Here's the little cutie allowing me to select it and there isn't a diagonal line on the icon indicating that it's non-valid.

Can you please run it again and when it is finished, generate a user error report (menu: File->Generate error report) and then send the error report to me at paul@efilive.com. Thanks.
