Backfire, then ESP light

I am from South Africa and hope somebody can help me. I drive a 2007 Lumina SS V8 L98 Auto.

5 days ago I ran the car flat-out, and at around 200km/h, there was a noise like a backfire, the car cut out, and did the same again. The ESP light came on immediately, and stayed on. 2 days later when I started the car again, the light was gone and everything seems normal.

Does anyone have a clue to what could have caused it?

sounds like it could be limiting speed and causing the throttle to cut out
