    Default Shared L29(454) tunes

    Hi guys,
I know there are a few of us who are tuning the 98+ L29 motors. Anyone wanting to share what you have, what works, what doesn't?
I'm slowly working my way into this, my truck's doing well but I'm wanting to get it as good as possible.

Are you tuning the black box, or a replacement 0411 ecm?

I have the black box. For what I use this truck for I'm not ready to upgrade.

I am in a similar situation. Had the truck since new, and want to get back the mpg that was lost when the 10% ethanol blend came into play by bumping up the base timing and leaning out the cruise afr. Have you been able to do any of that, or are you tweaking other things?

I had N0DIH give me an initial tune (bumped up timing a bit, firmed up the shifts) and I've been tweaking a bit here and there. Lately I've been trying to figure out how to set up a log with the black box so I do the automated VE tuning. Still have a lot to learn there.
I will say that two days ago I got a best ever 15.34 mpg running at 2200 rpm in OD, which works out to 64mph. That was empty and strictly highway miles though.
My overall average (most of the time if the truck is running it's hauling something) is right at 11mpg. I'm keeping track on the link below. Notice too that I've only put a bit over $600 into gas in the last 18 months. So it would take me a long time to pay for a marginal gain in mpg by upgrading. Driveability is good for me, so at this point I'm not looking to waste the VIN license I already have for the black box.

Thanks for sharing. I have (before ethanol) gotten low 15s mpg at 2200 which is somewhere around 70 mph or so, 4 occupants and a load of vacation gear. This truck is the crew cab short bed 4 wd, & I have the manual trans with 3.73 differential. My interest at this point in time is optimizing the black box tuning. Seems we are both heading in same or similar direction here. The incentive for me is this: my son had a '99 Yukon 4wd with 350 and auto, and he could pull low 20s on interstate. I feel the 454 is capable of approaching 20 mpg much closer than it is with better tuning.

So... Does anyone have a stock tune I can view in EFI Live? I need to take a look at the spark curves to get an idea what these higher compression (compared to stock TBI motors) 454s like.

My L29 is a 98 Suburban K2500 7.4L, It would be interesting to see the difference between truck and Suburban. I haven't had much time to spend learning and programming lately, but removing most of the torque management and adjusting a couple of timing points made a hugh diffference in performance and gas mileage, but I haven't even checked mpg yet. Had to many other projects in the fire.

I have a 1998 L-29 454 that I would love to get some more power out of I'd love to put a cam in it. Is there anything I can do to retain my OEM Injection
