Default Updating to 2002 tune from 2000

I have a 2000 firebird formula and have come across a couple threads that talk about flashing 2000 LS1s with a 2002 tune. From what I've seen it seems to be a good thing.

Is this something that everyone should do? I have a LS7 based 427 in my car.

    Thanks

You would do it if you wanted to run COS5 (which is based on the 2002 OS 12212156) or if you wanted to do a 4L80E segment swap (it is easier to find 12212156 files containing 4L80E segments).

It is a later OS so maybe the GM engineers improved some things in it...

If your current tune is not stock, then you would have to copy all your tables over to the new tune (table-by-table, takes a few hours of careful copying).

Like Joe said, there are some improvements in the 01 & 02 OS's. For one, no more backup VE tables! The best thing is that if you go to the 12212156 OS, it makes it easier if you want to upgrade to a custom operating system (i.e. if you want to run speed density, 2/3Bar, or nitrous). If your 427 hasn't been tuned yet, then it would definitly be worthwhile to start with a 12212156 OS to tune it...

Thanks. I wasn't sure what happens to VIN. I saw a couple of posts talk about it but didn't really say what happens. Is it just assigned another for the purposes of the computer and nothing else is really effected?

VIN is not a problem, you can write the correct VIN into the new tune (can be done using the scantool).

The VIN is assigned so that the other modules on the serial bus can cross check security.

Also, the tunetool lets you perform VATS relink if necessary (the BCM learns the PCM's VIN).

Also, the VIN is read from the PCM during emissons/smog testing.

Ok, I must have missed something. I tried to flash the computer and it said the file's operating system number, 12212156 is not compatible with the PCM's operating system number, 09381344. A reflash is only available when both systems are compatible. I also just updated the software. Thanks

You have to do a full flash.

Is that the "flash pcm operating system and calibrations" option? It's grayed out. Is there something I need to do to make that option available. Thanks

    Yes that one.

Did you enter the registration details from your blue card (exactly as on the blue card)...?
